I think that it really depends on where the house is located, which to me usually dictates what they are looking for or what they will pay for. I live in a beautiful area in Northern Michigan where, the surroundings are one of the major attractions to the area. There is a HUGE scale of rentals up here - from older homes with basic amenities, cabins, RVs, etc, to high end modern homes. They all sell up here and all get a good rental rate.
Those offering the basic amenties allow people that are on limited vacation funds to be able to come and experience the area and participate in the attractions. They may not have been able to visit the area if they couldn't get the affordable accommodations.
What is the one consisent thing is, whatever the accommodations, they want Clean, well maintained facilities. You can add some wonderful ammenities to an older home, that won't cost a lot, but enhance the guest experience.
