My 16 pound Dachshund ate rat poison at a Pet Friendly AirBnB in Watervliet, MI. Airbnb & Host will not Reimburse my Vets Bills.

Hello All,

My 16 pound miniature Dachshund ate rat poison at pet friendly airbnb in Watervliet, MI late August 10th, 2023, 1/2 of checking in. I was a guest and my sister made the reservation.   This was supposed to be a fun, sister's trip to Lake Michigan & to celebrate my Birthday. We had to rush my dog to the closest emergency Vet, an hour drive south to Mishawaka, IN.

On route, I had to call animal poison control, pay $95.00 to open my dog's case for the Vet. They would then tell the Vet the best way to decontaminate my little dog.  The Vet made him vomit. That is the only thing for decontamination since their is not an antidote or treatment.  W e were at the vet from midnight to 5am.  My vet bill  was $333.25.

The Host is not taking responsibility for her negligence in leaving open rat poison which my dog easily sniffed out and chewed on. Sadly, neither is Airbnb.   Airbnb told me they will not reimburse me because I was the guest and I did not make the reservation as well as, they need to protect their community. This was at 1:00 am EST.  I with my sister had been trying to get me reimbursed since August 11th, the day after my dog's emergency trip. The final run around was last night.

I call BS on that.  I wrote the CEO, Brian Chesky an email  early this morning as well as the head of hosting, Catherine Powell. I have not had a response back from either one of them.

I have seen several other posts very similar to my little Dachshund's rat poisoning.  This is so sad.

Does anyone have any resolve from their dog's being poisoned?  Does anyone have any input for me to consider?

Mary

Thank you so much Paula.  I hope your input helps.  Airbnb clearly wrote to me & my sister that they will not reimburse my dog's vet bills.  I don't understand this.  The host put out open rat poison, in her pet friendly Airbnb.  It was not in a bait trap as it should be as per EPA regulations. To keep pets, babies, small children safe.  Thankfully, we caught my dog with the poison in his mouth.  And took him to an Emergency Vet, albeit one hour south drive.  That's what saved him.  Had I waited on the host to respond back to my voice mail & text, time would not have been on my dog's side.  The poison would have been digesting, digested.  Then it's took late to save a pet's live. Because there is no cure.  Also, the host knew that I was bringing my miniature Dachshund.  She even petted him on our arrival.  Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you, Mary
