Hello, I am new to AirBNB hosting and a guest with a new account requested to stay for two weeks. The person keeps insisting to cal them and won't type their questions in messenger. I am suspicious, what steps should I take now to verify if this is a legitimate person or not?
Hi @Miho59
That kind of behavior is a major red flag on Airbnb. Guests who insist on phone calls before booking (especially new accounts with little to no history) often try to move communication off-platform, which can expose you to scams or safety risks.
Politely tell the guest:
“For everyone’s safety, Airbnb requires all communication to stay on the platform before booking. I’d be happy to answer your questions here.”
Do not call or give your phone number until the booking is confirmed it violates Airbnb’s terms and puts you at risk.
If they keep insisting on calls, avoid answering, or pressure you to accept, report the conversation to Airbnb. Click “Report this message” in the chat and select “Feels suspicious or unsafe.”
You can message Airbnb directly via the Help Center or Community Support Chat, explain the situation, and share screenshots. They can check the account for suspicious activity.
Hi Patricia,
Thank you for your advise. It's very helpful. I will tell the guest about it.
Hi @Miho59,
I'm glad to see Patricia's advice was already helpful over the weekend!
Have you heard more from the guest since? Let us know how it goes, and whether you'd like more guidance from our community 🙂
Thanks,
Emilie
