I have a renter who checked in which me I was out of the house. My apartment is in the basement of my home. It is completely non smoking. I came home from dinner to the smell of pot or vaping. My listing clearly stated non smoking. My welcome email clearly stated non smoking. I sent an email immediately requesting them to stop. What other actions can I take? I don't want them in there continuing to smoke. Can I charge extra cleaning fees? Can I kick them out early? What recourse is there.other than a bad review?
You already let the guest know about the issue. Smoking inside a non-smoking accommodation is a violation of your houserules (your houserule clearly states: no smoking). If the guest continues with the violation, then you can contact Airbnb.Airbnb, they can also end the reservation and you probably want compensation from the guest for damage.
There is a big risk you will receive a very bad review. You can ask Airbnb to remove it, as such a review can be considered as a retaliation.
But this is a not an easy proces and the result is unfortunately unpredictable.
If you cancel the reservation yourself, you will face penalties from Airbnb. To have Airbnb waive the penalties you need to proof the guest violated your houserules. And stil there is the risk for receiving a bad review.

Thank you Emiel. I have reported it to Airbnb. I won't know the extent of the issue until they check out tomorrow. At a minimum,.it's likely to incur additional cleaning fees.
Just to be clear, one of the highlighhts of vaping is no smell. I am sure you know what you smelled just they were actual burning to create the odor.
You have told them you know and stop.
Now, you do have to wait, it isn't a safety issue. If they follow rules, yes. you do have to deal with smell. This is different then a nasty smell, if the next guest for their employment can be drug tested this is seriious
For me I am in Arizona were its .legal now. My husband drives a company car so he maiybe subject to random testing and the majority of my guests are specialed doing a work job were for safety issues they are subject to testing.
I have a designaed cigarette area. I do not allow cannibas smoking indoors, I politely say others in the house are subject to drug tests, I have had a couple of guests that enjoy but I only know because .exterior cameras.
I think the gdectectors are a good investment. I am a smoker and I follow rules but if I was a rule breaker a threat of a fine is if you catch me and prove it after i have left compared to a noisy alarm whch makes you visit during my stay..
Thank you for that info ni wasn't aware or an alarm.
