** personal information hidden ** is the worst host ever hands down. I booked a room and unfortunately had a death in the family that we found out about the day after booking. i tried to cancel immediately and she refused to give a refund even though she had 3 days notice. I ended up losing $350 dollars in the process. I then checked my Itinerary and check in detail email. If i would have stayed the night i would have had other roomates (not listed in the add) and they have a dog. Everyone stay away from this host as much as you can. She is a terrible person and has 0 compassion. Shes very shady and only cares about taking your money.
@Jeremy760 Why do you think a host should refund you for your personal circumstances? Your booking blocked her calendar to other bookings, so refunding you would mean you have cost her money.
How would you like it if a host simply cancelled the rest of your booking after you had been there for a day because of her personal circumstances.
When you book an Airbnb, you are bound to the cancellation policy that is in place for that listing.
And this forum isn't the place to post about a host you have issue with. That is what reviews are for.
I'm sorry you had a death in the family, but it doesn't seem to have stopped you from finding the time to call out a host for upholding her cancellation policy, which you agreed to when you booked.
@Sarah977 it takes 5 mins to make a post. Not sure how long it took you to make yours. You hit the nail on the head with your “It would have cost her money” comment. I’m assuming your a host? I guess that gives you the right to show no compassion towards clients as well. I literally tried to cancel less than a day after booking. I understand I “blocked her schedule”. my trip was canceled due to someone dying in the family. If someone in her family were to die I’m assuming she wouldn’t need to remove me from her listing. Hypothetically, if this were to happen, and she asked me to relocate, and if I was unable to do so I could stay, and I was allowed 3 days to do so, I would at least try. I think that’s the situation your imagining when you said “How would you like it if a host simply cancelled the rest of your booking after you had been there for a day because of her personal circumstances.” If I’m incorrect please let me know so I can get a better understanding of where your coming from. Also, I would also start by saying sorry for your loss. I wouldn’t just copy and paste a generic cancellation policy. The fact that she was not willing to work something out at all is what’s sad. Reposting the listing and trying to fill the spot would be the right thing to do. I was willing to pay if the location wasn't filled.
hotels and flights would never care for your circumstances. this platform is the same.
@Sarah977 Also you cannot leave a review if you cancel a booking. I know your a lvl 10 member, so you probably knew this already, but I’m curious why you said “And this forum isn't the place to post about a host you have issue with. That is what reviews are for.”
Hi @Jeremy760
I'm sorry you lost a family member but a little confused as to why you are calling out a hosts for upholding the cancellation policy you booked under.
why didn't you take out travel insurance for your trip - if you had it would have covered you for cancelling because of the death of a family member .
one could argue that you are the terrible person for calling a host names and expecting her to lose out on $350 of income because you chose not to take out travel insurance.
whether you booked an Airbnb , non refundable airline ticket or concert ticket - you still would have been held liable for cancellation charges .
@Helen3 I didn’t once say she should lose out of 350 dollars. I agreed to pay if she couldn’t re book the room. In this case we had the ability to try and rebook if the host was willing to do so. I’m such a horrible person that I agreed to let her keep the cleaning fee if she was that strapped for cash.
Actually that's exactly what you said, you stated "i tried to cancel immediately and she refused to give a refund even though she had 3 days notice. I ended up losing $350 dollars in the process."
Nowhere did you state that you were only asking for a refund if she was able to rebook the dates @Jeremy760
@Jeremy760 You never said originally that you were amenable to only being refunded if the host could rebook the room. You said you thought you deserved a refund.
And "I agreed to pay if she couldn't rebook the room"?
You agreed to pay regardless of whether she could rebook the room or not by booking the place to start with.
FYI if a host had a death in the family and had to cancel a guest, Airbnb would not consider that to be an acceptable excuse. They would expect the host to find someone else to take care of the guests and the host would be penalized if they went ahead and cancelled.
When I said this wasn't the place to post about a bad host by name, that is what reviews are for, yes, I know that you can't leave a review if you cancel less than 24 hrs. before check-in. What I meant is that first of all, calling out a host or guest by name is against the forum policy here, and the moderators will remove the personally identifying information, and that this is an international forum with thousands of users from all over the world, so there is little value in posting about a specific "bad host" or " bad guest". The only people that would benefit from being warned about a host or guest are those who who might book that place or might get a booking request from that guest.
Don't get me wrong- I am not saying a host should always uphold their cancellation policy and never agree to refund for compassionate reasons- I might very well do so.
But a host isn't required to, and upholding their cancellation policy doesn't make them a bad person.
