Hi @Kathryn68

If the windows are open, and that makes the house not secure  (if you are on the ground floor or 1st floor, for example), and If I was in your position, I would text the guest and inform. Something like:

@"Hello XXX, We noticed this morning that you left the (bedroom / living room, etc) window open.  For your security, and of your belongings, we entered the room and closed it.

Once there, we noticed that you left TV and air con on. To help the environment, we took the opportunity to turn it off.

Please be mindful and please make sure that windows are closed and that lights and appliances are turned off when you leave the airbnb.

Thank you for understanding.

@Kathryn68     I never enter a guest's room unless it's a dire emergency, but I live here so it's easier for me to keep on top of things and remind people to turn things off.  If a remote control switch-off is viable I would look into that.

BUT you do need to be very careful, some guests have been known to use entry as excuse for all manner of egregious and dishonest accusations.  I would write in your rules that you will enter  if windows are left open or whatever, and definitely contact the guests before you enter.  Also make sure you tell the guests that you will do this,  whether in a message or in person when they arrive, you can even leave a warning on the front door so they are reminded just before they leave.

I tend to agree with @Roberta2 and like the wording of the message.  I also agree with @Ange2 about adding some language in your rules about what would require your entering the premises.  I think most hosts would prefer to respect privacy, but security and protection of your listing also has to be considered.  Entering to turn off lights and TV doesn't rise to those standards, but should be included in your review of the guest.
