Do you allow smoking or vaping at your property?

The question of smoking or vaping in a rental is a sensitive topic for many hosts.

On one hand, allowing it might make your place more appealing to certain guests. It shows flexibility and consideration for their preferences, which can lead to a better experience.

On the other hand, smoke can leave lingering odors, damage furniture, and mean extra cleaning—adding costs and potentially affecting future bookings. Plus, it’s important to think about guests who might have allergies or respiratory issues.

What’s your take—do you allow smoking or vaping in your rental?

Hi Elisa!  I don’t think it’s possible to satisfy everyone, but if your target guests are more likely to smoke, allowing it could be an attractive feature.

If you have a suitable outdoor space, maybe allowing smoking only outside could be a good compromise. It offers flexibility while keeping the indoor space fresh for all guests.

I have a really big outdoor area that guests can use. I don’t explicitly mention that smoking is allowed anywhere, but since the space is so open and private, I don’t mind when they do. It seems to be a win-win. Guests have the flexibility, and it doesn’t bother anyone.

No, I dont allow either. Even if people are permitted to smoke outside the property, the smell of smoke clings to them and still gets onto the bedding, into the fabrics of chairs and that smell is almost impossible to remove.

@Elisa No it has never come up.  I think perhaps people see on my page that I dont allow smoking and accept that.  If I am losing bookings because of it, then so be it.  I myself am highly averse to the smell of cigarette or vape smoke and I do not want it on my linens or my furniture.

Always.  It's one of the first things I ask, or look for in the descriptions of rooms.  K

That's a good point.  I hadn't thought of the smalls on their bodies that could rub off on the bedding and furniture.  I may re-write my rules to state "non-smokers" only

While , I do not allow smoking and vaping inside my property. They are welcome to smoke and vape outside in the back all they were like I'm not against smoking, and I just don't want them to do it inside the property

I stipulate no smoking or vaping in the house but my property does have a garden where they can and do smoke outside - ( I find cigarette butt's out there).
