I just had a guest who ruined about half of my washcloths/towels with make up. I have provided makeup remover wipes as well as stated in the rules that guests should not use washcloths to remove makeup as it is very hard to clean, even with bleach. My towels now look like they cleaned a car engine with them. Has anyone else had this problem ( or guests not following rules in general) and do I have any recourse? I realize that towels are not the most expensive thing that I may need to replace, but it is pretty annoying.
Hi @Cynthia1415
We provide colored washcloths for makeup removal. We kindly ask guests that white towels are not used for makeup, as oil-based products often leave permanent stains.
If something frequently happens, I agree with @Patricia2526 you need a different answer. If you don't want to change to colored, then your next step would build yourself a safety net. Maybe increase your price by a dollar and with that money buy a backup supply of white and just toss if someone ruins a washcloth.
@Cynthia1415 There are guests who just don't seem to understand the damage that their beauty products do. Replacing washcloths happens a lot. It is a real PITA.
I have a pretty dish on the bathroom counter next to the sink, and it is filled with multiple makeup remover washcloths (beige plushy microfiber) as well as individually wrapped makeup remover wipes. Most guests comprehend that these are what they need to use. While my towel sets are fairly nice, the washcloths that are folded on top of the bath and hand towel sets are "cheaper". I purchase them in bulk from a big box store so I can throw them away or turn them into rags as they are destroyed by makeup or certain bathing products. The resulting rags are stored in the kitchen in a basket marked "Towel Rags" which also seems to clue some persons in to being better about towel use.
Guests who ruin my towels are privately messaged (NOT reviewed) about the damage, along the lines of "Please be advised that your makeup/tanning product/shampoo/hair dye/car washing has damaged the cabin towels. We hope that you will be more considerate of the expense that this can incur for your future hosts." I DO NOT charge the guest as the damage done by a retaliatory guest review is greater than the expense of replacing washcloths or towels.
Create/estimate a damages budget and add a few dollars to your nightly rate to pay for the replacements.
What a great answer! Thanks for the advice. I think I'm going to use your words to reply to my guest (in private) about their damages. It's so annoying! I don't want to be THAT host who is constantly giving bad reviews but...
