How do I use short codes for scheduled messages?

I have created one scheduled message so far and it goes out as soon as a booking is confirmed.  I don't think I am doing it right.  I tried to use a short code in it but I don't know if the short code should be in between [] or <>. I have tried it both ways and when I see the scheduled message go out on my end what I see is Dear [guest first name] or Dear (guest first name) but it never actually has the guest name in there on my end.  What am I doing wrong?

Select the short code from the drop down menu. Don't type it in. @Jacqueline955
