I agree it would be almost impossible to wash (and dry) comforters each time @Tom-And-Denise1

I think the majority of hosts don't use comforters and rather have duvets with duvet covers that we wash at every guest changeover.

That's exactly what I do! Duvets during the spring, fall, winter, and lightweight quilts during the summer.

I am in Australia and we use top sheet and what we call doona which is a duvet.  We have a lighter one in summer and warmer in winter. I also notice a few guests from overseas sleep on top of top sheet. I might try no top sheet in summer.

Yes @Robyn555 - here too, many guests don't seem to need the top sheet. It probably has to do with regional habits and the weather.

I feel there's already enough laundry to do at every changeover to keep us from getting bored, so I supply flat sheets and make it clear people people are welcome to use them, but we don't put them on the bed. Only about every 10th guest (that's a guess!) uses them out of choice, so it saves unnecessary washing, drying and ironing, as well as some scarce bedmaking time during a tight changeover.

I'm not sure whether hosts in all parts of the world could get away with this - it's possible there are areas where the majority of guests would really expect the bed to be made with a top sheet.

@Tom-And-Denise1  Duvet, duvet, duvet!  Comforters may be pretty on the bed, but guests don't aways sleep between the sheets, will drag them outside to have picnics, will not remove shams or throw pillows from beds and sofas, will use bath towels to wash cars, etc.  Most guests are great, but some were raised by wolves.

Toss the comforters and use duvets with covers.
