Unfortunatly, our cabin rental is in El Dorado County, CA. As of 1/1/23, the occupancy tax rate has increased from 10% to 14% for any occupancy as of 1/1/23. Airbnb has applied the previous 10% tax rate to all 9 of our 2023 reservations.
I have spent the last 5 days on the phone and in chats with Airbnb trying to get this corrected to no avail. I have been given misinformation stating that Airbnb applied the 10% tax rate because the reservations were made during 2022; however, they are still applying the 10% rate to a reservation made today so that is incorrect.
I was then told that I had to contact El Dorado County and obtain written confirmation of the tax policy. I did that and forwarded it. I was then told that they would not accept the written documentation unless it specifically included our address. I contacted El Dorado County again and received the requested documentation with our specific address. Tonight, I waited on hold with a representative from the Phillipines for 1.5 hours to talk with a supervisor and never reached a supervisor. I again had to settle for the representative telling me I would receive a return call with a resolution later today. I have been told that for each of the 4 phone calls over 4 days and I have not received any returned call.
To all hosts in El Dorado County- beware. You won't face the ramifications of this error until you file your 1Q taxes with El Dorado County but you will owe the additional 4% taxes all while you pay Airbnb host fees for these reservations!
You should check your reservations to ensure that Airbnb is applying the new tax rate to prevent discovering this issue when you file the taxes which will simply mean you will end up paying the difference.
Love to be a fly in the wall and listen to what Airbnb really thinks of this whole subject.
Hello @Samantha1099 ,
Thank you for sharing your concern! It would have been a confusing experience especially when it is related to taxes. I have nudged the concerned team if they can provide any clarification for you. I hope you receive some clarity soon.

Bhumika-
Unfortunately nudging won't fix this issue. I have called over 6 times and been put on hold for over 6 hours total without ever getting to speak to the correct escalation team that handles tax requests. The reps have no ability to contact this team other than through email - they cannot call or do a direct transfer. As a host, I do not have any ability to reach this team. The reps consistently try to reach them by email and receive no response after over 1 hour of hold time and then say that they have posted a message to the team and I will receive a call back within 3 hours. After 6 times, I still have never received a return call and the tax rate still continues to be incorrectly applied.
I am not contacting the tax collector for El Dorado County to make them fully aware of this situation as it will have serious impacts to their revenue and see if they have a different contact within Airbnb to get this resolved.
Obviously, I am not alone here as there are literally thousands of Airbnb hosts in El Dorado County.
I am now looking at suspending my Airbnb account and returning to VRBO since Airbnb has made it clear there is no host support! I am advising other El Dorado County hosts to do the same. If we all suspend, perhaps Airbnb will take notice and correct this issue.
Hi @Samantha1099 I am a Host in Calgary, Alberta, Canada and I am also encountering an issue with Airbnb incorrectly collecting Occupancy Taxes for one of my listings.
And I have also shared the same frustrations with the resolution process, and I am still waiting for this issue to be resolved after countless hours on the phone, and 5 separate Airbnb Support Ambassadors that have not been able to provide any assistance. Was this issue ever resolved for you?
Hi @Allison94
It was finally resolved in terms of Airbnb charging the correct tax. Unfortunately, the incorrect tax was charged for 4 months before resolution and Airbnb refused to pay the difference despite their mistake so it costs us as owners. Obviously, the issue was not resolved well and Airbnb took no responsibility.
