My pet friendly long term rental did not disclose that they have chickens on their property and requested that we take care of them. What, if anything, are we liable for if something happens to these chickens, and is Fowl allowed on airbnb properties that guests are asked to be taken care of?
I have never heard of a Host asking a Guest to care for the Host's animals on the property and I would definitely NOT do this. If you are within the free cancellation period and haven't checked in, I would cancel the booking and look elsewhere. BTW...did the host disclose anything about the chickens on the listing? Just curious, as this is bizarre!
If you can't cancel for a full refund, I would contact the Host and Airbnb and advise you don't feel comfortable doing this and ask the Host or Airbnb to cancel the reservation for a full refund.
There is nothing in the listing that mentions chickens, no. The listing agent said that the neighbor usually cares for tje chickens and could but we don't necessarily want a stranger in the yard with our dogs and child potentially being outside at the same time. We are booked through this listing through our insurance as work is getting done on our home. Does that mean that our insurance company is liable for anything that may happen to the chickens?
My suggestion would be move on to another listing...this is not fair to you as a guest. I would not want to get in the middle of a situation at the listing and it was totally wrong of the Host to ask you to do anything like this. I would advise the insurance company you are working with that the listing is not suitable for you and to find somewhere else for you to stay that is pet-friendly. Surely there are other listings that would be much better for you and your family.
Hi @Nichelle14,
I see Joan has shared quite a bit of advice over the weekend so I wanted to check in and see what you had decided to do in the end. Are you going ahead with the booking or did you try and find a different one?
Let us know how you're getting on! 🙂
Thanks,
Emilie

@Emilie We do not have the ability to find another listing due to having pets and our area does not have many long term rentals that allow animals. That is why I was hoping to get a clearer picture for what we are responsible for and liable for as far as this care. We aren't getting along very well but we will figure it out!
If that is the case...I would let the Host know that you wouldn't feel comfortable caring for her animals (chickens) as you wouldn't want the responsiblity for it in case something should happen to them during the stay. Perhaps this Host should hire someone to come in and take care of her animals and make other arrangements. After all, she is getting paid for a long-term booking. Just so you know, asking a guest to do such a thing is way out of bounds for a Host.
