Misuse of Property

When your place is used for a Meth’ party then you're asked for an apology.

We have had very positive experiences with Air BNB over the past few years, with fabulous guests and a respectful two way interaction with everyone. However, we recently hosted a person that invited another to stay, this person stayed on after the agreed time, holding what appeared to be a two day illicit drug fuelled gathering.

The property was left in a complete mess with vomit, blood and mucus on the walls. There were drug implements syringes, pipes etc. and even (weapons) altered knives left behind on their final departure. They also left some personal belongings too, mainly paperwork, but obviously important stuff. They refused to pay any damages or recompense for the extra cleaning required or the door prising that occurred when they rang (on my personal number at 3 am) when they’d locked the keys inside.

The claims process seems arduous and at this stage not very supportive of the situation for the host.

I have cleaned up and have new guests staying. I tried asking them for recompense , before I return the left items but they have refused. That they have and are using my personal number is a concern!

Now I just what them out of my life as they have threatened to visit my work place ( where I work with children)!!!!

I want to return the bag of papers and merely write off the out of pocket expenses incurred from this utterly awful experience. However, I do not want any contact with them as I know Meth’ users can be violent and dangerous.

Interestingly, the person who made the booking isn't happy with my truthful review and has asked me to apologise and remove it!

I have thought about going to the police, but they may be reluctant to deal with what could be seen as a lost property issue. It could also exacerbate the situation.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a resolution here?

Hello @Carol660

I am so sorry to hear about your experience.

yes absolutely you should have reported this to the police when it happened.

How was the person not on the booking able to stay once the booking was completed. Did you not go over to the property on check out?

I would suggest you block the guest who booked from contacting you on your phone number.

You are under no obligation to return any paperwork they left at your property.

I would suggest you continue to pursue the guest who booked through the Airbnb claims process for the costs you incurred as a result of the damage they incurred and extra cleaning costs.

Thanks Helen3,

I appreciate your advice and will pursue.
