I am hoping this is helpful for some. We have 19 cases in Maryland and none in our county or the neighboring county, yet people are panicking in a huge way and acting like the world is coming to an end. I work for a very large bio research organization which has a much more measured, scientific and less chaos-driven response. I am happy to share some guidance and facts that we have been given.
There is an 18% mortality rate for those over 80. There is a less than one percent (we never like to say zero in statistics) mortality rate for children age 0-9. 70-79 the rate is 7.8%, 60-69, the rate is about 3.6%. 50-59, fatalities drop to 1.3%, and under 50 its basically between .02 and .01%. For those who are not immune compromised or over 60 this is not an illness that will be anything more annoying than a cold. This is not a normally fatal illness. Exposure will allow your body to build up its natural immunity but communities do not want everyone going to the doctor at once as it may overwhelm resources. You cannot get the same virus twice. You can get a mutated version of the virus but not the exact same one.
Anti-viral drugs need to be given in the first 48 hours after exposure in order to be effective. This class of drugs can have difficult side effects so if you can't pinpoint the exact exposure, you are better off resting, drinking liquids and limiting contact with those who may be in a risk category.
If you get sick, you normally see symptoms within 5 days of exposure but incubation period can be up to 14 days. In the US east coast we are in prime allergy season so sneezing and coughing is not necessarily a sign of this illness. A fever is the primary difference and should be taken seriously. If you don't have a fever you don't have this virus.
Buying or stealing toilet paper will in no way stop the threat of this virus. Choosing to socially distance (no hugging or hand shaking) is not a terrible idea if you are concerned about exposure. There is no evidence that the virus lives on surfaces for more than 3 days at this time, so staying at an Airbnb that has been sufficiently cleaned should not be an issue. Flat and hard surfaces are more friendly to viruses than soft, cloth like surfaces. You can make a DIY cleaning spray by mixing 4 tablespoons of bleach with one part water. The CDC suggests using that or an ammonia or alcohol-based cleaning product.
Cancellations are really over the top for stays in April, May and beyond, and even the end of March. There is evidence that this type of virus will slow spreading in warmer months, so there is no need to take precautions to cancel trips months or even several weeks from now. In the US there is an advisory cautioning those to reconsider travel to places with over 100 cases. Currently this is California, Washington state and New York state. The CDC keeps the most accurate map of the current confirmed case numbers.
Hosts may need to be cautious with their cleaning supplies, water and other items left for guests. We usually leave everything out in our pantry but have had friends report that guests are stealing items en masse. Same with toilet paper. It might not be a bad idea to buy some small spray bottles and ration supplies for guests who are in panic mode.
Its very important that people support their local economies as much as they are comfortable so that this scare doesn't decimate it. There is not evidence that you can get it from cooked food, so frequenting restaurants, coffee shops, etc need not fall out of your habits completely especially if they offer a carry out or delivery option. Likewise, if you are in a state with less than 100 cases there is no current travel advisory for those who are not in a risk group. I can speak only about the US, as I am not as familiar with the situation in other countries.
Keeping calm, washing your hands frequently and using appropriate caution is the best course of action.
I agree @Laura2592 that those who are panic buying need to stop and consider the aged, the frail or infirmed who cannot get to the stores easily, to purchase fundamentals for everyday use, let alone self-isolation supplies. We all need to be more thoughtful.
@Mike-And-Jane0 The shelves are empty here too. No toilet paper, no liquid soap, no meat. I had to go shopping at 7am today since there's nothing left later.
Let's not forget, also, that the high risk category is not just seniors with underlying conditions, but anyone who might be immuno-compromised - anyone with HIV/AIDS, cancer, diabetes, transplant patients, or anyone currently taking immunosuppressive drugs.

OMG!
Those darn epidem-apoligists.
At times like these I wish I was an ostrich: I would just stick my head in the sand and everything would be all right.
No one has to hide at home. Go out, take a nice walk in the fresh air, go to the beach for a swim, just practice social distancing and wash your hands constantly.
But by degree of separation I would bet that you have a connection to at least one of the 7000 people who have died worldwide from the virus.
Oh wait, that number probably just went up exponentially.
Wouldn't it be nice if this was an overreaction.
Just fake news and disinformation: kind of like a vast political conspiracy. Lol
It's it's important that we all maintain a sense of humor.
I'll drink to that.
Dr. Ben Carson is just now on TV promoting a National Day of Prayer: oh man, will that ever help! Let's pray it away. Hope that works out for ya. Lol

For people who want to follow the spread of the coronavirus and the latest developments, on an hour by hour basis, the Washington Post, a major, well respected news source and newspaper has made their online coverage of virus related news items free for everyone online.
https://www.washingtonpost.com/coronavirus/?itid=hp__%3A
"We have made a substantial portion of our coverage free to all. That includes our stories about core news developments as well as stories that communicate critical health information. We also offer a free newsletter with links to stories for which there is no charge. You can get that.... "
Information is power, and your critical thinking skills can be used to interpret what you read and prioritize it the best way possible.
No one has to be guessing or wondering what is going on: all the information is readily available if you dig hard and deep enough.
No panic necessary.

Thanks for the reasoned post Laura. I didn't interpret your post as take no precautions and advocating being careless. It wasn't the least bit caviler. I am taking reasonable precautions to stay safe, however I go to a large gym several days a week to exercise and when using the machines I wiped them down especially where I touch handles and the key pads and when shopping I'm more diligent about using the sanitizers for the carts. I'm in California so I've decided for the immediate time to block my calendar until late April. I'll try to concentrate on several tasks at hand, (it's tax season remember?) and go through my items to sell on ebay and try to get caught up. Also can clean, sort and organize my storage shed. I've once had a guest who checked in with strep throat, (highly contagious) but I didn't get ill fortunately. She was one of my first guests and let me just say not desirable in any way to have as a guest. She took most of my hangers and helped herself to a few other supplies. I'd told her to dry her hands on paper towels which I supply but she still used the hand towels in the kitchen. So I just want to try to chill and focus on a few dozen other tasks at hand and see what the next several weeks look like.
For some reason April hasn't been historically a busy time for bookings so I'll look to other months to have guests as the year goes on.
@Dawn81 thank you. Yes I knew when I posted it there might be push back from those who were fearful or are in a high risk category. I only meant to share information and hope that some might find it helpful.
@Laura2592 I think it is incredible disrespectful. I'm not fearful nor am I in the high risk category. It is expected that around 600.000 out of a population of 5,8 mil. people in Denmark will get the virus within the next couple of month. Most of us won't realize we ever had it but we will spread it to those who are in the high risk group. The health care system won't be able to handle a huge amount of sick people at the same time. That's why countries are trying to delay the spread so the health care system can handle it. Italy wasn't prepared and doctors now have to choose between the patients. They simple don't have enough equipment. So many people will die because of that.
This is obviously a very emotionally loaded topic and I'm not sure why anything I have said would be taken disrespectfully. It was certainly not intended that way. I am merely trying to share facts and provide a viewpoint that is focused on remaining informed, cautious and calm. Again, this is not a debate nor argument. Giving into fear, despair, speculation and panic will not slow or halt the spread of any virus. My sincerest hope is that everyone stays safe and calm.

I don't know why you keep writing that this is a very emotionally loaded topic. I don't see see it that way at all, and I think you are mis-reading people's responses.
And why do you keep implying that
people on the thread are full of fear, despair, speculation, and panic.
That sounds what's called "projection" in psychological terms. It's when people project onto others what they are feeling themselves.
I think why people see some of your posts as disrespectful is that you don't hear what other people are saying: you feel the need to defend yourself.
We're discussing and debating the Global Pandemic. That's what this is, a community forum for people to debate and discuss things.
There is no need to continually explain yourself. You're writing of your thoughts stand for themselves: you have been very clear about what you believe.
It seems other people take umbrage with how you express your thoughts and what you believe. That is why people debate.
It's a good thing, not a bad thing.
-
@Laura2592 the thing is there is NO panic or speculation! People are calm and are following the advice we get from the authorithies - of course people find the whole situation scary - it would be weird if we didn't. We also read and are in general quite well informed. But we do NOT underestimate the situation. It is not for fun that countries are shot down, borders closed - it will smash and hurt the economy.
I don't understand your headline? Coronavirus fear vs reality?
Are you saying that the countries in Europe are overreacting?
Absolutely correct @Sandra856. So many deaths, because they couldn’t control the numbers needing assistance during the short and high peak time.

I just had a guest cancel to whom I issued a 50% refund. She had every reason under the sun to cancel, every reason except the coronavirus. Yeah, right. Sheer panic on her part. I was glad to see her go and get away with only a partial refund.
I expect quite a few upcoming cancellations and a slow season during what is usually a very busy season due to our institutions of higher learning and their graduation ceremonies.
Nothing to do but to play it by ear and see how it goes.
It's going to be a rocky ride for the next month or so and maybe after that till the dust settles.
We won't know much until the testing snafu is settled and we don't know if it ever will. We may never know the extent of the infections in this country as so far it seems to have been suppressed.
The government and the media are trying to minimize the danger of this pandemic. Seems to me the media is almost an unwitting participant in this minimization.
Reports are now surfacing that there is much more danger to young people then has been previously reported.
Current reports coming in from Europe, France, Spain, are very grim indeed.
I certainly wouldn't be going to any gyms. There is a reason why the professional sports leagues canceled their seasons. When people exert themselves during exercise, if they are infected, the virus will fly off them in all directions. I'd stay out of gyms.
I won't be blocking my calendar, but I'm not expecting that much business, but you never know how things will turn.
i'm keeping an open mind, paying attention to changing conditions, and trying to protect myself and my loved ones.
Let's do everything we can to slow the spread of the virus.
Do your due diligence.
