AirBnB's total incompetence is at a new level. THEY ARE REFUNDING 100% TO TRAVELERS THAT HAVE TRAVEL INSURANCE! Travelers have insurance to recoup their money! I don't?! Travel insurance should be covering this loss.. NOT ME.
Here is from my guest Steven this afternoon, "My travel insurance company say they will only pay out on unrecoverable costs of our trip to New Orleans. As AirBnB are offering a full refund for cancelling I have had to take that option."
This is from Mellissa: "Yes, I have the Allianz Travel Insurance, but the Air BnB rep said I didn't need to apply it as this fell into the extenuating circumstances policy. I reach out to them, because I could not figure out how to send you the policy stuff. They said that I only needed to go through the site and it would take me through the process..."
They have made this blanket statement to refund 100% of the booking cost. 100% at my expense. Travel insurance is 100% covering this. THERE WILL BE A MONSTROUS LAWSUIT FOLLOWING THIS.
The cancellations are devastating us. I’m so disappointed Airbnb didn’t decide on a way to handle this that would be fair to hosts. We are entering full blown busy season where we are and we are being robbed.

How is a thread like this not getting national attention?
In the UK hosts should not honour Airbnb's plea. Guests may not have travel insurance but they will have to claim off Airbnb who should have their own insurance to cover this risk. If you initiate the refund you will not be able to claim off Airbnb at a later date. They are passing their liability to hosts.
I've lost more than $10,000USD of dependable income because of this unfair policy. I've always set strict policy so guests can get 50% refund in case they cancel. My 2 properties are usually fully booked 6 months into the future. The hosts should decide how much they refund because the hosts are not insurance companies. Heck, even some insurance companies are saying they don't cover pandemics. So we as hosts should cover pandemics...
Travel insurance doesn't cover pandemics for good reason. Insurance company would go out of business.
So insurance companies don't cover pandemics but hosts should?
Also my insurance company covered all travel expenses when my flight was cancelled due to pandemic.
