Guest's son glued a drawer shut

Several guests ago we noticed a drawer in a small piece of furniture, which was normally very easy to open, seemed jammed.  The drawer contained our charging cord for our Ring doorbell (its the battery one, not hard wired and we charge it between every guest. ) We chalked it up to wear and tear and bought a new cord.

Last night when setting up for our next guests, we finally got the drill out and broke into the drawer from the back of the furniture. It was clear that it was glued shut! We knew exactly which guests had stayed when we first noticed the drawer issue-- over 14 days ago now-- and I contacted the woman who has since been following me on social media. It seems her son, a teenager (who was also NOT on the reservation) had "accidentally" glued it shut. She "forgot" to tell us. Apologies. When I asked why he would glue a drawer shut in a stranger's home she said (and this is a direct quote) "he is a very creative kid."

So review has been left and it was good, no recourse there. I have officially heard everything. Otherwise on turnover there was nothing odd after this guest, though they did use more than 2 people typically do (which makes sense now, there were 3 and 2 dogs.) I am just so irritated.

@Emiel1 that's kind of what the back of the little cabinet looks like now.

@Laura2592 You definitely get the most creative people! Still waiting on the book you are going to write.

Ah, now I get why people keep referring to your run of crazy guests.

I am frequently told by friends and acquaintances that I should write a book about my Airbnb hosting experiences. Yes, there was 'condom girl' and 'watermelon girl' and countless other weirdos, but my response is, "EVERY host could probably write a book about it."

However, I really think you must be the one. You're the one that needs to write the book. I am happy to write some footnotes!

@Huma0 let's collaborate.

I am serious. I think it could be a lot of fun. We could get other hosts to contribute as well. I have seen and heard some real lulus on the forum and from friends.

Yes, there is plenty of material on the CC. However, let's start a thread about this, e.g.

"Name your weirdest guest experience"

OR, probably more apt:

"Name your three weirdest guest experiences"

I wonder how many experienced hosts (especially home stay ones) could keep it down to just three? 🙂

@Huma0 lets do it as an end of year round up. We can put a fun picture in it as well.

@Laura2592  You definitely need Inna on the co-author team.

A friend here had a rental to a family- mom, dad, grandma and grandpa and 2 kids, ages about 7 and 10. The boy was apparently allowed to run wild. Seems mom and dad went out a lot, leaving the kids with the grandparents, who were heavy drinkers judging by the amount of liquor bottles left behind.

The property manager noticed the ladder, normally stored under the stairs on the back porch, up against the front of the house when she drove by, so stopped to see what that was about, as theft is a big problem here.

Oh, the boy put the ladder up so he could go up on the roof trying to catch lizards. He broke a whole bunch of clay roof tiles.

He also seemed to have taken a knife to some of the screens, which were found cut, and several other "no one is paying attention"  damages.

There were also a bunch of missing items after they left, some of which they admitted, on questioning, had "accidentally" gotten packed with their stuff, denying all knowledge of the rest of the missing stuff.

@Sarah977

Yikes!

I absolutely agree with HumaO - but the anecdotes are best appreciated by those of us “livin’ the dream, no? 😉

You say that, but my friends get a lot of laughs listening to my Airbnb tales of woe. In fact, one of the most frequent questions when we catch up is, "So, which weird guests have you hosted lately?" or something to that effect. Of course, I remind them that the weirdos are the exception, not the norm, otherwise I wouldn't still be hosting, but no one wants to hear, "That guest was lovely, and that one was really nice too and everything went fine..."

There is one story that has literally had people falling off their chairs they were laughing that hard.

@Laura2592 Goodness. Who travels with glue?? And who in the gosh darn world sees their kid vandalize someone else's house and thinks "oh, how interesting". People are the worst.

At least kick her off your IG account. And how about you pick out a new side table on Amazon or Target or something with shipping and tell her that you'll be happy to accept a replacement from her, "since you're sure she feels terrible about damaging the furniture". UGH

@Kelly149 "Who travels with glue??"

"Creative" teenagers, apparently.

@Sarah977 I suspect he may have been using the glue for multiple purposes....
