if airbnb do not charge money for cancellations should they not in someway compensate the effected hosts who have no say and no money.

Airbnb are a booking platform. How would they be able to compensate hosts? Where would the money Come from?

I am afraid we hosts will just have to live with the fact that a pandemic is going to damage our wallets and sadly, as some people lose their lives, some will lose their livelihoods. I know which one I would prefer to lose.

But it is not you choice. Airbnb chooses for you. I would think that as it affects both parties that a 50, 50 split, as it leaves you empty, is only fair. If airbnb decide for you they should take some responsibility.

@Robert-And-Emilie0 , in a pandemic or disaster different rules apply. There is no 50 50.

I find that the decision by airbnb  to make it possible for guests to  cancel any bookings from about two weeks  ago, and at the moment for the rest of the year, without any cost to the guests as a bit autocratic. I usually have strict rules on cancellations as it is difficult to find another large group at short notice. How does anyone know how things will develop?  I can take decisions, to close you down, without consultation from a government, of a country but not from a booking organisation.

If I had any say I would perhaps try to find a  solution that suits both parties – guests and host , but of course, here you are not given any say.
