I wanted to share a little story that captures why I host the way I do — and maybe inspire those of you who are feeling the burnout or wondering if your extra effort really matters.
A while back, I had guests stay at one of my places while in town for a funeral. It was a hard trip for them, and they let me know in advance that they’d be bringing their dogs. I could’ve just said “no problem” and left it at that — but instead, I left out personalized dog treats, coupons for a local winery, and a handwritten note by the fire pit welcoming them and honoring their reason for the trip.
I’ve done the same for guests attending weddings, visiting old colleges, celebrating babymoons — I make it personal every single time. Why? Because people aren’t just booking homes. They’re booking moments.
That same guest booked another stay before they even checked out. It wasn’t the first time it’s happened — but it was a beautiful reminder that small things create lasting impact.
Whether it’s:
- leaving lights on for late arrivals
- curating a list of dog-friendly cafes
- placing shells by the back gate for kids to discover
- or building a modern wood table by hand just to elevate the backyard vibe…
…I’m not just managing a listing. I’m building memories.
To anyone reading this who’s ever wondered if those personal touches are worth it: they are. You may never get tagged in a post, but you’re changing the way people experience the world.
Thanks for letting me share this. I’d love to hear your version of “why I host.”
