Airbnb Taxes

Airbnb Taxes

I received a notice from the city that I host in that Airbnb is not remitting the taxes to them. My taxes are set up correctly inside of the app indicating all of the appropriate jurisdictions that are supposed to be receiving the lodging taxes when I check that section. The taxes are charged to my guests, and there’s an excel sheet of all the bookings and their respective taxes. However, the city tax is collected with a third party.

Im unsure how to move forward because an excel sheet saying taxes were collected doesn’t help me. I need paperwork indicating where Airbnb has sent the funds so the city can retrieve them OR they pay me back the taxes and I can pay them.

Has anyone else had this issue where Airbnb is remitting the taxes but it’s not making it to the appropriate authorities?

the way my tax system is set up is the state collects taxes for the county and the city and remittance them. So my assumption is that Airbnb is sending them a check and then they’re supposed to be giving the money to the other agencies. I’m really just not sure at this point

There are some articles about  tax collection, i mentioned them below.

The article about "tax collection and remittance by Airbnb" contains a link to the state of Alabama, which explains also taxes collected for specifically Birmingham.

Unfortunately it does not mention to whom Airbnb exactly sends the taxes, which seems to be your issue..

I fear only Airbnb support can provide that answer to you.

The first article explains how taxes are collected and where you can find "tax collection eligibility" (if any) on your listing(s)
