Major Disruptive Events Policy Question

Hello fellow hosts, our city is not subject to any evacuation orders, we have no fires here and we are 1 hour away from any fires, yet Airbnb is allowing guests to cancel reservations and we have to absorb the loss. Is this happening to you and what is your take on this?

Hi @C68 , hope you're doing safe with the current situation in the region!

I wanted to share that natural disasters are a covered event under the Major Disruptive Events Policy, and this could include areas beyond immediate evacuation zones and areas impacted by hazardous air quality.

Given the unpredictable nature of these uncontained and uncontrolled fires, Airbnb implemented the policy in areas where currently it does not appear safe or appropriate to ask guests to complete reservations. Airbnb is also assessing this situation 24/7.

I hope it helps clarify!

Kind regards,

Hi C68,

It seems like you're facing a frustrating situation where Airbnb's policy allows guests to cancel reservations even though your city isn't under evacuation orders or directly affected by fires. The Airbnb Extenuating policy can sometimes feel unfair when you're not in harm's way but still end up absorbing the loss. It's not uncommon for Airbnb to prioritize guest flexibility during such events, and hosts often find themselves in a similar position but this is part of their Terms of Service when we sign up as Host.

It could be helpful to reach out to Airbnb support and explain the specific circumstances of your area, especially if your location is far removed from any direct danger. Sometimes they can offer more clarity or confirm if the guest is really eligible for Extenuating Circumstance policy.

I hope this helps.

All the best,
