The new law that began Jul 1, 2021 was actually crafted by the State of Georgia.... they made it so third party booking major sites (Airbnb and the other major competitor I cannot name) have to collect and remit ALL local taxes themselves. I can tell you from speaking to the Chatham County revenue office that local revenue offices are just as curious as you are as to how this is is going to work out. The local offices like City of Savannah Dept of Revenue are really quite organized and used to getting very clear monthly reports from business owners. Airbnb's big lump sum payment is going to be an annoying change from what I hear.
But there is one thing that is for sure, if you can show the money went through AIrbnb then you personally are not responsible to collect and remit the tax.
From what I understand, you should still send in the hotel tax monthly tax return form (at least until the local office decides if they want to change that requirement) but without any payment. If you had no direct bookings, just include a note that "this much money went through Airbnb exclusively".
If you ever rent short term to anyone directly in the future you should collect that 6% for the city and remit that yourself using that tax return form.
