Airbnb submitting taxes

How do I stop airbnb from submitting taxes on my behalf?  This is not a benefit that I want to participate in because we do other business with the state and it is throwing up red flags. Please provide instructions on how to opt-out of submitting taxes.

@Amy300, did you get a request from ABB to submit your tax info to them? If you got the request, and havent submitted it they will withhold 28% of your income for submission to IRS. Generally this kicks in with having earned $20k/yr AND 200+ stays.

If this is not the case and you are talking about state or local taxes, ABB has agreements with many locales for occupancy taxes and you cannot stop them.

I have yet to see a FAQ on how to find info in your area. For instance, I am in Santa Rosa, CA county of Sonoma. ABB collects 12% for Sonoma county except for residents w/in Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa has it's own 12% occupancy tax which ABB's FAQ suggests you should add to each reservation OR collect in person (odd, since I was told never to accept ANY payments in person for ANY special requests). I am looking into this more before my first booking.

@Linda108  Airbnb does not allocate the collection of taxes to each listing when they submit the taxes to the government. Airbnb has actually promised hosts that they will not submit the taxes collected and identify the hosts that they were collected from. Airbnb does this, of course, because they know that many of the listings on their site are not legal listings. It is a shame, because I used to submit the taxes myself and now I have no record of what Airbnb submitted on my behalf. I have talked to my provincial tax office and made a complaint about how Airbnb is handling this. I was assured that this was only the "first step" and that in the future each listing will be identified with the tax submitted on that listing's behalf. But, for now, we are in the dark.

We are still in the dark and they are still keeping the money.

Why is Airbnb able to collect local taxes on our behalf and pay without any breakdown? My recent payout was over $100 less with no accounting. And when is it sent to the city, monthly, yearly? Is it because of bad publicity received for Airbnb & do others, such as VRBO, do this? I think it is up to the an individual host to take care of their taxes. First it's the state, now the city. As a host who puts themselves & their place out there for total strangers to stay in, it seems we have all the responsibility, l but not to handle our own taxes.

I post my rental on other sites as well- so when I do my sales tax quarterly  I to just add up the nights that are rented by anybody other then ABB- I am assuming that they are paying taxes on my behalf ( since they collect) but why am I not seeing that payment out on my state tax site - it doesnt show that any payment other then the one I made has been made- do they pay yearly?

@Ravit0  The occupancy taxes are not remitted on an individual basis but in a lump sum.  Apparently that is okay with the taxing agency.  Air BNB may not have an agreement with all applicable taxing agencies so check in the Help Center article about what taxes are collected.

Exactly my issue. No record of payment submitted by Airbnb therefore I have to pay again.

i got very lower income  now, i am a single mom living with my 9years daughter, i didn't know the tax before, so i filled in the form, but

now the tax is too much for me, i need pay a lot of money for my house mortgage, property tax, HOA, food, etc. my income only $400/month. now how can i cancel paying the tax i can report tax in the later.

Joanna,

You should consult a tax advisor to maximize your deductions so you don't have to pay tax. Your ABB rental activity might actually increase your refund.

I rented  my house just once last year and received an email from airbnb  that they will collect from my customers and pay to isr  and for me to don't be worried about taxes via this correct? I'm renting my house this year so I would Luke to know this isue

We are having a similar issue.  We just started this in Aug. 2017 and thought we made sure we had all the info down correctly.  We understood that Airbnb was collecting our STATE occupancy tax on our behalf, ok great. We see the breakdown of them on our Gross earnings page. We also found out that our local city also requires another hotel/occupancy tax which we pay separately than the STATE tax. We have done that since starting - paid our own local hotel tax which is in ADDITION to the State tax Airbnb collects on our behalf.   But the real question is  HOW is AIRBNB REPORTING OUR INDIVIDUAL ( each host/airbnb location) OCCUPANCY TAX to our STATE Comptroller departments?

We have a separate LLC we set up specifically for running our rental. We wanted to do this legally and legitimately.   We need to have the STATE occupancy tax applied to our unit - not a lump sum payment which doesn't identify anyone who has a rental and they're collecting taxes from.  I put a call in tonight to Airbnb and the rep had it all wrong. He was saying something about the IRS and filing a 1099  and only if we make over $20K a year in earnings etc. and that has nothing to do with the occupancy tax for our state. He was so mis-informed.  I will call again on Monday and ask to speak to a supervisor but he said he would make a "ticket" about the tax questions and get a specialist to contact me.
