In terms of your question, I am sorry to hear your parents were ill, I can imagine what a worrying time this was, I really hope they are feeling better now. This does sound like the situation may have been eligible for Extenuating Circumstances, however as it was treated like a standard cancellation, this is why you calendar is blocked. I would recommend contacting the Support Team and explaining the situation to them. Here is a useful Community Guide on how to contact the team.
