Blocking in advance

Hello. 

Im new to airbnb and was wanting suggestions on blocking out dates.

Do you leave it all open. Do you block out 3, 6, 12 months? What's your experience in order to maximize bookings.

I have my calendar open 6 months in advance maximum & have since I started hosting 3 years ago. For me 12 months is too far in the future to have bookings - I may want to travel myself or block the room off for visiting friends or family.
