I pre-approved a guest reservation by mistake. We both want to cancel without him having to pay the fee or me being penalised. Any tips on what to do? Thanks!
Your best bet is to call Airbnb. I would love to know what they do in this situation. I don't think they will let the guest out of his Airbnb fees though but you never know.

@António7, you say that you pre-approved but you didn't say that the guest went ahead and booked. If they didn't, then there's no issue. They simply let the pre-approval expire, or you can revoke the pre-approval.
Is this the case, or did they actually go through with the booking?
