Breaking house rules

Breaking house rules

We've had some problems with people breaking our house rules-for example smoking. They claimed to have smoked outside but our rules state very clearly that there is no smoking on the premises. There was no damage done, but we feel it necessary to have some consequence for breaking a pretty serious house rule. In our house rules we state that if they break that rule they will be charged. So we charged the guests a fine and consequently they got very upset with us. I just wanted to hear from some other hosts if charging for a broken house rule is something that is common or if it sounds reasonable or unreasonable . Thanks!

Hello @Jeni16 ,

You can not charge (or present a "fine") for a broke houserule. Only if it is related to the airbnb booking (like more guests  arriving then booked). Or when something is damaged. If guests break houserules, you can do something else like give a warning, ask them to leave, cancel the reservation, call Airbnb for assistance etc. Smoking outside the house did not "damage" something (but inside can !). Maybe state clear in your lisitng you want only non-smoking guest.

Best regards, Emiel

If they break your house rules they break everybody else’s house rules as well, so put the bit between your teeth and give them a "thumps down".

There is very little else you can do that does involve a considerable amount of aggravation and loss of income on your part.
