There are many threads about host cancellation available in the help community that all have the same responses: Do not cancel!

Even if the guest makes the cancellation request and you approve, Airbnb will see it as if the host has initiated the cancellation. Always tell the guest he should cancel himself.

However, you could get in touch with Airbnb, preferably by phone, and explain what happened. You might get lucky and get to speak to someone that understands and appreciates your explanation an remove the penalties.

@Bob43,

Why should the guest have to cancel and not get refunded when this sounds like it is clearly the hosts fault.  I took a look @at @Baileigh0's listing and it is listed as an entire house/apt so the guest most likely thought they were suppose to get the entire home.  That is what I would think.  If I found out I had to share for a couple days, you would bet I am going to make the host cancel as it is advertised incorrectly.

With this one it seems right that the host cancel and takes the penalties, you need to work out what you are doing, either list it as a shared space or have 2 listings, one shared and one whole house.

Assuming you do not have a clear plan as to which situation will apply, list it as a shared space.

To be honest, I didn't look at the listing before I wrote my comment. I just did however and it clearly states "**Entire home vs shared space varies based on the night you book. Occasionally it will be shared space, please message me before booking for info if needed" in the first paragraph.

If this part wasn't added within the past 24 hours, I would think that the guest should have contacted the host upfront.
