I was looking for a whole flat/apartment for my trip to Japan in November. I found a property with 6 bedrooms but after booking, the host told me it is in fact a shared property. I've asked the host to cancel but they aren't willing to budge. The property was listed incorrectly. Can you tell me whether I can get a full refund (with the airbnb service charge) or not and what steps do I need to take to get this sorted?
I am sorry to hear you have had this bad experience with a host. Of course you won't want to stay at a shared property when you booked one on the basis that it was for your sole use.
Contact BnB straight away - tell them what has happened and ask for a full refund.
They will be able to see your conversations with the host and the original booking.
I booked a place in Feb this year which turned out not to have all the amenities listed and one in particular which was a major reason for booking that place. I contacted Airbnb and they offered me the choice to find me an alternative or refund me in full. I think you will be able to get the full refund including their fees if the listing states that it is an entire property and you have found out that it is in fact shared - it is not fit for purpose, simple as that.
