Hi there,
Does anybody know how the "Average Overall Rating" in the Stats page for hosts is computed ? And why a 4.8 rating is (apparently) the same thing as 80% five stars trips ?
Thanks in advance,
Olivier

The 'Host Standards' section on the stats page is your progress toward becoming a superhost. This is a screenshot of MY page, but the goals are what are required by airbnb for everyone to meet to become a Superhost, 100% commitment, 90% response rate and 4.8 average overall star rating. 4.8 is 80% five star reviews as long as all the other reviews are 4 stars:
I may be wrong but as a statistician I would assume the calculation of your average score goes something like this:
As an example, let us say in the last year you had 30 reviews:
24 - 5 star
5 - 4 star
1 - 3 star
The calculation for you average score would be (24*5 + 5*4 + 1*3)/30 = 4.7666
Although 80% of your reviews are 5 stars, that one 3 star review has thrown off your average score to just below 4.8. If you instead of the one 3 star review, you had six 4 star reviews you average would be exactly 4.8.
(24*5 + 6*4)/30 = 4.8
Again I'm just a statistics guy but this is how you should compute an average score. I have no idea how airbnb actually does it.
Interesting, @James1, thank you very much. But it's seems, as far as I know, that this goal of 4.8 average overall rating is the same for every wannabee superhost -- is this not your own goal in your stats page ? On the other hand criterion to be superhost (regarding only reviews) is 80% of five stars trips. So these two notions should be equivalent somehow. But your calculation show clearly that it's not the case. That's what bothers me...

OK, I see, you're right. The value 4.8 corresponds to 80% five stars and 20% four stars. And your calculation explains also why some people meet 100% commitment, 90% response rate and 4.8 average overall star rating without getting the superhost status. Because of rounded. Indeed the effective last goal is 80% five stars.
Example : 100 trips, 79 five stars, 21 five stars.
You're not superhost because you have only 79% five stars, below 80%.
But the calculation to compute the way you progress give (79x5 + 21x4)/100 = 4,79, that is 4,8 rounded to the nearest 0.1. So it seems you're a superhost but you're not !
I can see from my own stats that computation is sometime rouding up.
Everything is clear for me. Thank you very much again, @James1.
And by the way, congratulations for you perfect average overall rating !
Olivier
@James1 But one more thing if you're still here... How a 95% Star Trips can be consistent with a perfect 5 average overall rating ? Do you have any idea where does come from this number below your average overall rating ?
Thanks again,
Olivier
@AgnèsandOlivier0 I am only guessing but I've hosted 27 groups in the last year, all five stars except one four star. The star graphic only seems to be able to show half stars so I'm closer to 5 stars than 4 1/2 stars and I get the benefit of the stars rounding up. Only a guess.
You're a star James!! I am a superhost and was at 4.9 but this went down to 4.8 after a malicious review from a guest who had failed to read my rules about bringing his own guests into my home. despite getting a few 5 star ratings after that, it just looked like I was not getting back to 4.9 and was wondering if there was an element of of 'punishment' or being put in the dog house by AirBnB; the reason for the paranoid being because I did tell the guests in no uncertain terms what I thought of such behaviour. Your calculations have helped cure this paranoid. I have put them in an excel spreadsheet for those who might want to use it to figure out what's happening with their ratings/ scores
Hi Malvin - Would it be possible to have a copy of the sheet? Or at least the formula to write into a sheet. Thanks Kev
I’d also love a copy of this!! Have been most confused and paranoid about my rating and this calculation would be most helpful!
