Credit Card Scam - beware!

Just now, I received notice by email of 3 AirBnB bookings in China made using my stolen Visa card details. I am nowhere near China, and have no intention of going there.

The first was cancelled, followed by the second two for much higher sums (totalling about 1000

sterling).

As I had just made a genuine AirBnB booking a few minutes earlier using the same card, it looks very likely that the AirBnB site is insecure, as the card has not been used lately for anything else.

I have informed my Card company and AirBnB, and hope this action will lead to a successful outcome.

In the meantime, I shall remove my Credit Card details from the AirBnB website. Any other suggestions?

I hope this alerts others to this scam, or that it's a one-off.

I had I had a payment credited then debited off  my debit card yesterday and I've only just seen it on my statement this morning.

I don't  have any card details stored on my account??  I'm waiting for my bank to open to discuss this and cancel my card.

This is madness as I cant event find a link to speak to someone on here

Hi Michael,
I also suffer from the exact same issue.
Today I received an sms from my bank, telling from my card was just spent 1950 HKD internationally.
I called my bank immediately and told that i did not make the transaction.
My bank canceled my card immediately.
I will learn the details of the transaction tomorrow.

The sms is as follows.
airbnb @ hmadsjjh89 1937.05 HKD

As far as I understand, my card was used by airbnb in Hong Kong. HKD is hong kong dollars currency code.
I have never been in Hong Kong.

Obviously my card was copied or my card info was stolen.

This kind of fraud is commonly made in touristic places, like hotels or restaurants.
I had been in several places in Europe this year. Italy, France, Holland and Germany.
I strongly suspect that my card info was copied either in Rome or Paris.
Because I only used my credit card for paying the hotel bill in Rome and Paris. All other payments, like restaurants and cafes I made by cash.

So Michael, were you also in Italy or France this year? Where did you use your card? Especially in touristic hotels?
I strongly suspect that my card was copied in the hotel that I stayed in Rome.
This kind of fraud is made in vast numbers, in hotels. And then the fraudelent personnel wholesale sell these card numbers to other crime organizations.

Is there any feedback about this? Did you get ur refund? My card was used also today and I dont know what to do, airbnb told me that theyll escalate this to their legal

team

Hi, this happened to me this morning as well. Call your bank right a way to have your card blocked, and coordinate with airbnb. that was I did.

This happened to me this morning. 2 airbnb bookings both in CNY (chinese yuan) currencies with total of CNY 3400 or roughly around USD483. I found out about it since my bank sends me text messages whenever my creditcard was used regardless of the amount, this is a feature I activate for this kind of scenarios. I have an AirBnB account but I don't have my card details in here and never booked anything before. So I was shocked when I received the notification of said bookings.

Anyway, so I called my bank and had my card blocked. I also called Airbnb and reported the issue. Today is just day 1 so let see how many days will it take to reverse the fraudulent transactions.

Hi,

did you use your card either in Netflix payment, or facebook payment?

there must be a common place that we used our cards, and they stole the card number details.

UPDATE:

I received an email from Airbnb trust and safety last night, as per their advised they have refunded in full the amount incurred from this transaction. Same day and Airbnb was able to resolved the issue. I advise you call both airbnb and the bank for faster action.

Hi Mam! I am also from PH Makati and the very same thing happened to me. 2 of my ccards were used on this kind of transaction. I already filed a dispute over the first one. Today the very same thing happened to my other card so I got no choice but to call airbnb overseas. I hope that they will also refund my money.

hi,

did anyone also use their cards for either Netflix or facebook payments?

there must be a common merchant where we used our cards at, and the hackers stole the card numbers from that merchant.

kind regards

Same thing happened to me, was charged 2000 Yuan (Chinese currency). and reported to airbnb and my bank.

Once you report this to Airbnb they refund the amount however they won't have the same amount as charged probably because of exchange rates and bank charges but this is unacceptable. They would even tell you to cancel all your disputes with your bank and they willingly refund 100%. It seems like a scam to me. I would suggest you report to your card and they handle it themselves.

Yeah, happened to me recently. I saw an unknown transaction charged to my credit card via AirBnb on 8 Jan 2020. I've contacted my bank & cancelled my card. They're now investigating the case.

What is the percentage of getting back the dispute? Did you guys get the money back?

Should I report to Airbnb? My bank said no need to report to them as they will do on by behalf.

Thanks.

@Niza-Hidayu0  Yes, you should report to Airbnb because the person who charged on your credit card needs to be flagged by Airbnb so they can't book again.

Noted & Reported. Thanks for your advise, Sarah.
