Daily room service?

Daily room service?

I am a new host and was wondering what the suggested protocol is for guests staying a few nights.  Should we make the beds and tidy up the bedroom and bathroom or leave it as is?

This really depends on what you want to offer.

I charge a cleaning fee and use that to pay a cleaner after each reservation.   Each new guest gets a perfectly clean room with fresh linnens, etc..

I do NOT offer daily cleaning of the guest rooms.

If a guest is here for 10 or more days I'll have their sheets/towels changed mid way or weekly if they're here for 2 weeks or more.

This is more because I dont like the idea of people sleeping on sheets for that long or using towels for that long.

Some people charge a weekly cleaning fee but this is hard to collect as you have to bill it after the reservation.

For common areas, the cleaner cleans those after each guest, so it's usually cleaned every few days.  Otherwise I make sure the common areas are cleaned at least weekly.

If you have a particularly messy guest, ask them to clean up after themselves.    I had one that left a plate of food for 2 days, and I reminded them that they need to clean up after themselves.  They were apologetic and were better after that.

Also be careful about what commitments you make.. If, in your listing, you promise daily cleaning and then can't clean one day then you're guest has the right to be upset.   If you make it clear that you don't do mid stay cleanings but then you go in one day and clean, they may also be upset you went into "their space".

So don't overcommit and just communicate with your guests.  You may WANT to give some guests better service and others you prefer not put much effort in.
