I suppose you will get different answers to your question. It depends of the damage cost, nightly price, if the host/hotel has any private insurance or not, etc...
Our guests made some minor damages and all of them paid for it. We don't request any refund if the total damage is less then 10€ like a plate, glasses, sheet, towel, etc.... but if it is more then we do.
Some hosts put a few € from every booking aside to cover the cost of the occasional damage if it happens.
Unfortunately, some hosts had their properties trashed and after a long and exhausting battle Airbnb covered just a small portion of the total damage (like 250€ out of few thousands damage)
