Erroneous Request for Funds

It is ironic that the morning after I leave my very first non-five star review for anything, I get hit with a bill from the homeowner and accused of tampering with her locks. We have always been so pleased with our AirBnb/ (Hidden by Airbnb) / (Hidden by Airbnb) stays. We don't have high expectations, just a clean, simple place is fine. I have always left five star reviews, but after this experience, I felt the need to let other potential renters know a little about this home. I thought that I worded the review very nicely, considering the issues with the house. The home had an upstairs leaky tub. The leak had gone through the floor and stained the downstairs ceiling. Because the home had these moisture/mold issues & odor, family members, that were also on the island, did not wish to come over to the house. The homeowner's "smart" lock took multiple tries to download on my phone. No one else that was staying there had the app on their phone. The app didn't work and we ended up getting locked out of the house. The locked beeped at us repeatedly, so we kindly asked the homeowner if we could remove the batteries. She replied no, so we didn't touch the batteries or the lock, we just dealt with the incessent beeping during our stay. After all the patience it took to deal with the worst vacation rental that we've ever stayed in, I get hit with a $500 bill for leaving a 3 star review and accused of tampering with her lock. When we were there, she had told me that she was coming to the home the following week. Now she is trying to get me to pay for her trip. I am so at a loss of what to do. The homeowner has a house on Seabrook Island, SC and Martha's Vineyard, MA, so obviously she has a lot more resources at her disposal than my little family trying to take a memorable trip with our kids before school started back. Any advice from the AirBnb family would be appreciated.

@Kristen262  Just don't agree to pay. The host will have to provide proof to Airbnb that you damaged the lock, which she won't be able to do. And she would have had to report it to Airbnb within a day of you leaving and before the next guests arrived, which I doubt she did.

Sorry you had these issues. Hosts like this give the whole platform a bad name.

Thanks for the advice.  We always use vacation rentals and have for years.  We have never had any problems and have always happily rated everywhere we stayed 5 stars.  I guess we just got the bad egg in the bunch this time, but I appreciate your insight on how it all works.

@Kristen262   I'm curious, you sound as if you are a long time user of airnbb, but you only have two reviews on your profile including the one with the dispute about the smart lock.

@Mark116  See the part of her post where the names of other vacation rental sites were blocked by the bot? (Hidden by Airbnb/Hidden by Airbnb) I assumed she has booked through other vacation rental sites in the past.

Reading the review/rebuttal below @Kristen262's one, I'd give  this listing a wide berth. As @Sarah977 says, don't pay up if it wasn't you.
