Favourable Review Removed

We had guests who, although delightful people, left our apartment in the worst state from a filth perspective than any of the hundreds of guests that we had hosted previously.  Because I particularly liked them, I debated as to whether to mention the filth in the review.  However, it took us twice as long to clean the apartment and I realised that, had we had guests coming in that same day, we would not have had time to prepare the apartment for them.  I would have liked to have known that in advance and wanted to let other hosts know.  I worded the review carefully, saying how much I liked the family and would host them again.  At the end I said that although I would recommend them to other hosts, the hosts need to allow extra time to clean as the apartment was left very messy.  I didn't use the words 'dirty' or 'filthy' which would have been more accurate.

The guests had had a wonderful stay with us and left on a high note.  The only thing that I noticed when seeing them off was the sink piled high with dishes.  If that was all that was wrong, I would have given them the benefit of the doubt and assumed that they had run out of time.  However, there was food, blood and other unidentified marks on all the linen, the carpets, the sofa and even blood in the fridge and freezer.  There were also empty bottles, wrappers, toilet tissue and other rubbish under the beds and furniture.

When her review was posted, she had rated me five stars in every category and gave a lovely review, even stating that what had started off as a horrible holiday in a previous Airbnb stay had been turned around by their stay at our place to an amazing holiday.

When she read my review, she contacted me privately through Whatsapp and accused me of giving them 'fake smiles' in order to get a good review and suddenly listed a whole lot of complaints about our apartment which had, up to that point, been 'perfect'.  She told me that she was going to 'review her review' of my place as a result.  I was under the understanding that, once the reviews were public, they could not be removed or edited.  I discovered today that her review has been removed.

Has anybody else had this experience?  What concerns me is that this means that our guests can be as bad as they like and no matter how good we as hosts are, if we say anything negative about them, they can remove their reviews.  This means that other hosts do not get to see what they are like.

@Alison432  That's outrageous! There are tons of guest reviews which mention negative things and I've never read of any reviews being removed unless they violated Airbnb review guidelines. If I were you, I would contact Airbnb and ask on what grounds the review was removed. If they can't give you any review guideline you contravened, demand that the review be reinstated. Look up the review guidelines and policies for removal first, so you know exactly what they are. If the CS rep you get is unhelpful, ask for the case to be escalated.

I messaged Airbnb last night to ask for an explanation.  I am still waiting for a reply.

@Sarah977

Happens all the time. As does guests having reviews removed because the host has mentioned something innocuous, that the guest happens to take offence to (hence the ridiculous, ridiculous palaver that goes on with hosts agonising and spending hours/days going all round the houses, trying to select the "correct" benign words and phrases that will escape the Airbnb censorship scissors, when composing their reviews of rogue guests.

And the guests all know the "Keep calling back until you get a co-operative CX agent" trick too. If they want a review removed - for whatever reason - there's a very high probability that they will get it removed. Yet another reason why the Airbnb review system is deceptive, dishonest and not fit for purpose.

ABB really favours guests over hosts... It's sad.

@Piotr48

While it absolutely does appear (from our perspective) that Airbnb favours guests over hosts, and the company policies and practices are indeed skewed in guests'' favour - if you scan guest-related forums, groups and blogs, you'll very quickly see that on the whole, guests fully believe that the very opposite is true, and they feel that Airbnb favours hosts over guests, every time. But the truth is, there are just as many guests as hosts (if not more), getting shafted, lied to and ripped off by this company every day of the week.

In reality, Airbnb gives no more sh*ts about guests, than it does about hosts. The one thing - and the only  thing - that matters to this company now, is making sure that their sugar daddy backers like Jeff Bezos and Ashton Kutcher, get their bonanza cash-outs when it comes to IPO day. .

Hi @Alison432  that is an awful finish to what you saw as a positive, happy stay.

Just to clarify -  was it the guests' great review of you that was removed?

Hi Lyn, yes, it was the guests' great review that was removed.

@Alison432, was the review removed or was she able to alter it and give you a lower star rating? It's outrageous in this case that she should be able to remove it, but it would be worse if she was then able to alter it and lower the star rating.

Hi John, fortunately she was only able to remove it - I agree, it would be worse if she were able to alter it and lower the star rating.  I presume that Airbnb would have removed it, but I cannot believe they would do so without contacting me to hear the other side of the story.

@Alison432, I agree it is crazy, but unfortunately, I CAN believe they did it without contacting you! Just one of many issues hosts have had and will continue to have. It really shows how little regard they have for us hosts.

@Alon1

Review removed. Star rating remains in this instance.

@Susan17     How is that possible?   Airbnb says  the only possibility is both review and rating removed or both review and rating stay,  one or the other alone is not possible.

@Susan17 @Ange2

Susan,

If you're talking about Alison, then please check the number of Reviews & Ratings.

You'll see that her 3 listings still has equal number of R & R. 189.

It obviously suggests the Ratings were automatically deleted with the Review

Therefore it seems like you've jumped to conclusions.

Ange,

I'm with you, it's not possible. Susan is convinced otherwise.

See our little tete-a-tete in last week's thread:

Hi @Alison432

hope you are well.
sorry this has happened- happened to us also.
Out guest however

- threw out entire trays of bean skins into our bathroom sink and tried to do this with our shower drain and blocked it

-broke a glass vase and dented the newly furnished flooring (about a month old)

-left so much rubbish in her fridge and room...

it was bad. My parents love people and god knows they are living angels and have patients of saints but even they got angry! I left a non emotional review without any particular comments (made these privately)- and she got Airbnb to take off her review for us.

Honestly- if it’s not worth your peace then let it go! Life is truly too short!

sending so much love your way!
happy holidays

Yadira 🙂
