Fix the Guest Count! Please!

I am so tired of seeing "1 guest" bookings and having several show up unprepared for more than 1 person.

I had more to add to this but posted by mistake. Guests should not be able to send a request without having to select the number of guests. It is a bad experience on their end when they realize their are extra charges and a bad experience on hosts end when we have fun surprisea on arrival. I'd say around 70% of my guests are entering the wrong number. Both parties need transparency and we never had this issue before until whatever the last update was. Tech Team please fix this!!

I agree. I always have to mention "you have booked for one guest. Is this correct? If more plan on joining you please let me know and I will update the reservation." One extra step that I shouldn’t have to do.

@Zappa0Definitely needs attention! Before booking a screen or pop up that requires them to confirm the number of guests. I watch for "we" in the first message when it is a single guest. I have a 3 bedroom house, 2 night minimum. a single is very unlikely. I make the guest fix the request. I guess I am old and cranky now 🐵

@Ana0yes. For me I have to set up kayaks for tj

Stupid phone. For the appropriate number of guests to be able to kayak to the boat. I have to bring out extra bedding from shore and create beds if there are more than 2 ppl (table pops down likea camper). I charge extra for more than 2 ppl.

I also watch for "we" and then have to constantly send alteration requests and wait for guests to accept to update so 4 months from now when I quickly look at guest count to prepare (have several boats) I wont forget. It's really a hassle and would be a better user experience for all if tech fixed it.

In your first message to the guest(s):

I would be happy to host you.

I will need a little bit more information in order to honor your reservation.

Please confirm the following:

Total number of guests during your stay

Your first and last name

Your city or town of residence

Purpose of your visit to my town (area)

Thank you for booking (or requesting to book) (depends on if you have instant book or not)

Yes. I send these messages as well. I don't hear back in 24 hours. It expires. I get a nice note from airbnb about responding to guests in a timely manner.

These suggestions are all good work arounds until it gets fixed. 🙂

I appreciate the above tip, and will add to my process, after having a poor experience last week with a guest saying she was alone, only to see a male person in our yard at 5 am, smoking a cigarette. This person was unknown, and could have easily been taken as an intruder. My husband asked him what was up, and he casually stated, "Oh, I'm just having a smoke." I reported this incident by calling, and after 45 minutes on the phone with two Airbnb SuperHost people, this was referred to a "Specialist", who got back to me the next day (not the 1 to 2 hours promised). This 3rd Airbnb rep. asked me to provide a picture! This was ridiculous, since I do not grab my phone to document something of this nature, especially at 5 am. and this inferred that it was necessary for me to back up my report as if this was a court case, instead of taking me at my word.

Also, after my saying to one rep. that I wanted guidance, I was merely told of the rules again, no advice .... and the so-called "Specialist" was going to "reach out" to the guest about this. I did not want a negotiation with the guest, just wanted to report the behavior so other hosts were alerted. After not receiving any guidance privately and discreetly with the Airbnb Customer Service,  I chose to tell this tale in the review, and I am bracing for some anger and lack of understanding from the guest, expecting that anyone who repeatedly used the word, "I" in her communication with the host, would be unlikely to understand the objection to a second, unstated person staying in the apt.

I would feel more supported and confident in my hosting, if my Airbnb calls (three in total) were handled with maturity, and sensitivity, rather than officious rules and procedure.

Hello @Zappa0@Branka-and-Silvia0@City-Limits-Ranch0@Ava30@Emilia42

Thanks for your topic here, Zappa.

I was booking an Airbnb today and I thought of your post here. Currently when you are going through the steps to confirm the booking, it shows this dropdown to prompt guests to confirm how many people are coming:

Number of guests.png

Do you think this is enough or how would you make this stand out further to guests to help hosts?

Thank you,

Lizzie

@Lizzie

As I said previously :

now the default number of guests is 1 and it would be much better if it is 0 (zero) so if we would get booking for 0 guests we would know immediately the number of guests is not entered.

Hello @Lizzie

I do not have this problem with number of guests on regular basis.

Maybe some guests, when they want to take advantage of the host regarding the number of guests, they do not mark the right number of guests.

I like @Branka-and-Silvia0  idea/suggestion, to start with zero guests.

Anyway, if they want to take advantage, they will mark 1 anyway.

In my pre-booking message I have a text where it is said "Please be sure you have set the right number of guests".

@Lizzie, I know it seems like common sense here and especially when you take a screen shot of your recent experience. But for some reason, there are a good percentage of guests who are missing this step. I don't think they are doing it to sneak through the system. I get a fair number of bookings where the pronoun "we" is used in the original message but the number of guests is 1. It is unfortunate because when the reservation has a discount applied, it is impossible to alter the reservation to the correct # of people without the price adjusting a little. It seems weird to me to tell the guest "I updated the reservation to 2 people and now your credit card will be charged .87 cents." So I just leave it as is and write myself a little note that there are actually 2 people instead of one.

@Lizzie  This would be better. I always ask. Usually people will say "I'm coming with my spouse and children" and I'll note it is only 1 person and ask them to update. I charge the same for up to 4 people because I get a lot of families. But I charge extra for a fifth person. So I make sure guests aren't trying to skirt that rule.

What I suspect is most people search for 1 person because it's the default on Airbnb and forget to change it. So far no one has been offended when I ask for an updated count.

But with all things, people don't pay attention initially so anything you can add is a great help 🙂
