ID verification for visit to Spain and GDPR data protection

We are due to visit Spain next month and the host has asked us to provide photo  ID in advance or passports to make a record with the data on the Madrid Police website. While I've visited Spain previously and had my ID details taken I wondered if and how this has changed with the GDPR regulations and how airbnb and the host safely manage this information. I would have expected the process to have changed to that I'm responsible for submittiing my details to the police directly (similar to advanced passanger information on flights)

Any advice appreciated

Russell.

@Russell108 I am not sure about Spain but where I live you have the option to give the host your information or go to the police station by yourself and then bring back the filled forms to the host, which means the host will have your personal information both ways, the question is do you want to go looking to buy documents and than travel to the police station and to the city council which will take at least 2 hours of your vacation time or do you want the host to do it for you, the information is requiered by the host anyway for security in case some of the guests do something illegaly. The fines are enormous, almost as high as the summer earnings, so no one here will risk that by not collecting your informations for the police station and city council for tax collection.

Russell, I live in Andalucía, and (as a host) I must collect guests' ID information (DNI/passport number and details, name, and a copy of the photo ID) to turn in at the local police station or (with a certain sort of registration in the obligatory guest reporting system) online.

I imagine it's a similar situation in Madrid. (So, bottom line: your host probably isn't trying to scam you. She's probably just trying to comply with whatever law and procedure is in effect in Madrid.)

I haven't perceived any difference post-GDPR.
