Lodging Tax in Oregon

Lodging Tax in Oregon

Hi -

I'll be filing my airbnb taxes first time in Oregon and have this question to any fellow residents out there - I see that the 1% tax on each booking has been calculated and remitted - but where has it been sent?  My listing is in Hood River County, and I've just spoken to the local tax authorites there, stating that they have not received any payments for 2015.  Where have these taxes been sent?

Thanks for any help!

@Marketa-and-Scott0 Is Airbnb collecting  the lodging tax on your behalf?  I didn't see Oregon on the list of areas where Airbnb is doing this. But in the event they are, Airbnb collects directly from the guest and you are out of the loop.....at least this is done in areas where they collect the taxes.  In Florida, the local authorities were really confused and it took some time for the info about Airbnb to filter down to the rank and file.  Here are all the links for lodging tax, commonly referred to as Occupancy Tax:

If none of these links answers your specific questions contact Airbnb.

I also have a rental in Oregon and Air bnb is taking out the tax automatically, however they are taking 1% and it should be 10.4%! I have found no way to change this and will contact them about it.

Hello! Did you get a response? Thank you!

Oregon tax is 1.8% (state) and every city and county is different.  I'm in Cannon Beach and our local  is 8% so 9.8 total.  Airbnb is still using the old state 1% and I have had zero luck getting support on how the remittance works.  They are collecting the 1% but no trail of where that is 'remitted'.

Hi Greg,

I'm curious if you have captured any more current information regarding if/when Airbnb is now collecting the proper 1.8% Oregon State lodging tax, and if they are properly remitting it to the state of OR.

Thanks,

Don

@Don-And-Donna0  Go to this link and scroll down to Oregon where you will see what Airbnb is collecting in vairous cities / counties:

This is the latest information on Airbnb's website.

Hi Don, I am wondering if you figured out the answer to this question. We are in Jackson county in Southern Oregon and have had our airbnb listing for a year. We just got notified by our city that airbnb has not remitted any of the taxes to them. Could you let me know what you found out. Thank you.

Hi Heather and Mike,

In most "small cities" (take mine for example, Dundee) Airbnb does not manage anything to do with city occupancy tax. The property owner is 100% responsible to handle all aspects of it. For your city, you need to verify this with the Airbnb team, but I'm all but 100% sure they will tell you city and county related occupany tax matters are solely your responsibility. (They do handle the Oregon state occupancy tax which is 1.8%.) Some counties don't institute a county occupancy tax so you'll have to check with your county office. Here's a phone number for Airbnb support in case you don't have it: 855-424-7262. Best of luck... But I suspect you remain responsible to back pay your city related occ taxes.

You need to read OR HB4120, which as of July 1, 2018 REQUIRES ABB to submit taxes on all levels.  City/County/State throughout the state of Oregon.

I got a notice from the County to stop collecting local (city) because they are required to by law.... but are not doing so.  Still just county & state.

My attorney & a couple I have contacted says I'm not liable for any 3rd party transacations  (TripAdvisor/VRBO/AirBnB).  Anyone that collects monies on my behalf is responsible for submitting the taxes to the appropritate governing agency.

interesting!  I have a home in Sunriver where airbnb is not supposed to be taking taxes but is for city of Bend.  I am really frustrated that I cannot find a phone # to reach anybody at airbnb.  Airbnb is collecting taxes on my home but I am paying the taxes both state and County?!

@Kathryn90  I took a look at your listing and they are only collecting the following tax:

Accommodations Tax (Oregon)

You if you are still collecting this tax separately from your guest, you should stop, as they are being double taxed.

Here's a guide on how to contact Airbnb - Twitter is usually the quickest.

It is my understanding that the tax they are holding out and remitting is the Oregon State Accomodations tax only and that each city has their own occupancy taxes.  It is the city's ( or county if you live in rural areas) occupancy taxes you should be collecting and sending to your city, municipality.  I recently spoke with our city manager who stated they had no official Airbnb policy..but on the city website, it clearly states anyone renting their home or rooms for less than 29 days is responsible to collect and remit this tax. So I am going to go down and get my business license and find out the remittance process works.
