It goes without saying that guests want a clean home, but as a host I am much more picky than a typical guest. We clean our own 3 homes but if I were to hire a maid service I would be more interested in their attention to detail than anything else. Will they take time to make sure everything in the medicine cabinet is orderly? How about all of the hand soap bottles angled specifically in correlation to the sink with the push spout perfectly aligned? Will the water bottles in the fridge all be "fronted?" Will the throw rugs be lined up with the tile grout? Will all of the TV's be checked to make sure they have been left on the correct source? Are the towels and wash rags hanging on the racks in such a way as to not show the edges? Will dirt be left in the room corners? How often will the area under the sofa and heavy chairs be vacuumed? Will a little toilet paper origami be left on the end of the TP roll?
If a maid service came to me and assured me of their attention to detail at a price I could afford I would consider them over a maid service offering to leave a mint on a pillow (bad idea, by the way, as sometimes the candy will melt and stain the pillow case- use a silver tray instead). It's the extra attention to tiny details that separates 5-star hotels from mediocre attempts.
Funny thing- I had a maid service once that, if a guest left their Thank You note, would take the note and put it back into the envelope and place it back on the little stand like it was for the next guest. I never could get her to throw it away, so had to go to the house between every guest to make sure the new guest did not get the old guest's card!
