UNABLE TO SEE GUEST PHOTOS ANYMORE

After 7 years and over 500 guests staying in my small home in New Zealand this new rule of Air BnB hiding the photos of who is wanting to book is unexceptable .
I have always asked new guests for a little something about who they are if they haven't set up a profile and a photo just so I can get a feel and feel comfortable with people I have never met coming into my home.  Aparently guests can see the hosts still
Its my home and feel like hiding a photo gives me a lot less confidence staying with Air BnB.
I have never taken someone in 7 years without a photo (and Profile) and won't start now.

Looking after Hosts safety and fairness should be a priority for Air BnB .

My house make up of 3 guest rooms means I have to choose wisely to get the right mix so guests too can have a good experience.

I for one are not willing to partake in this format anymore.
Seems like a new rule doomed to fail

Just access the guest profile. You will see his picture.

I don't know if it's different in Brazil, but in America, you can no longer see the guest picture when you go to their profile until there is a confirmed reservation in place. I have not hosted since this change. All of the inquiries I've gotten lately have been from men and at the last minute and I haven't been comfortable to host them without at least seeing some pictures to get a feel as to who they are before they show up in my home at 9, 10 or 11 at night.

Airbnb New rule

I have hosted over 2000 guest and have over 800 enthusiastic reviews and I have never declined a request based on someone’s look but I have always requested guests (specially those new to Airbnb) to add a picture to their profile before accepting the request. This is because I want to see who I let into my own home.

The Oxford Dictionary states:
Discrimination =
1. The unjust or prejudicial treatment of different categories of people, especially on the grounds of race, age, or sex.
2. Recognition and understanding of the difference between one thing and one other.

It may well be another case when you rent a whole flat but, in my view, the whole point here is that when it comes to your own home, where you live with your family, it is a basic human right to be able to choose who we let in , i.e. to “discriminate” .

It is not a crime. It is not unfair.

We choose our friends, correct? That is a form of “discrimination”.
We choose our spouses correct? That is a form of “discrimination”.
We choose who we let into our own homes. It is one of our fundamental rights.

It is not my case but if I do not feel comfortable having person into my own home who has a sexual orientation different from mine , I should and I do have all the rights not to have them as guests in my own home.

If a single lady is not feeling comfortable with hosting men in her own home, she should be allowed to choose, to “discriminate” this without receiving a subliminal message that maybe she is being unjust or prejudicial. It is within her human rights to decide who she lets into her own home.

If someone does not like to have men with a beard around because they awaken sad memories of the deceased grandad, one should be free to exercise the right to choose (discriminate) not to let them into their own homes.
How do you do this without seeing a picture ?

One may decline a request not as an unfair and prejudicial treatment but as a measure of self respect.
If my ex had red long hair. I may be painfully reminded of her/him if I host a lady/man with long red hair.

I actually believe that it is a fundamental human right violation to deny the choice to “discriminate “ who we let into our own homes. It could be argued that it goes against article 8 of the European Convention of Human Rights which states:
“1. Everyone has the right to respect for his private and family life, his home and his correspondence.
2. There shall be no interference by a public authority with the exercise of this right “

According the laws of most western Countries, not even the police, with the exception of emergency situations, can enter your home without your permission unless with a Court order.

Does Airbnb have more powers than a Court ?

There have been changes imposed on us that are already unfair and heavy to swallow. Take the 48 hrs penalty free cancellation policy.
If the guest can cancel penalty free why should the host not have the same right? Is it me or is this a one way street? How fair is it?

It must be said that we are not forced to be hosts and we can leave whenever we want to. The truth is that Airbnb is a private business and therefore it is not democratic. We have the choice between: take it all as it is, or, leave it all as it is. Unfortunately, because out there there is no real alternative, Airbnb has the upper hand. It is their business, they decide. Full stop.

There is a possibility, a small possibility, that if enough of us write and complain they might actually listen.
Am I being naïve?

Hello and surprised there are not more responses on here.

We are totally against this COMPLETELY!!!

In BC Canada landlords have no rights it is all about the tenants hence why I got out of renting it is a nightmare!   We now put our entrust into a profile picture, references and a system that is run with Airbnb of which I am happy with until now.

Now I have to be here for every person checking in??   We don't get to see who "WE" are renting out Our HOME to?  This is OUR HOME!    Our home of which we just put brand new hardwood floors in of a tune 16,000.00 and we have no rights??

PLEASE obviously there is more to this story and you forgot to let us into the WHY Airbnb?   Are being put into one big pot of stew because something is happening on the other side of the world?

There are different platforms to use in Canada quite a few!

I am really upset with this process, Airbnb makes changes, no explanation and sees what happens????? Airbnb you are creating a whole lot of upset with no explanation!

We as hosts have a right to whom we rent our home to and feel safe renting it out to them.    What happens this rule now - If we don't feel safe we can cancel?  We call in after a picture, don't feel safe wish to cancel - How are you going to handle this new influx of calls that will happen?

The process of taking a chance, then something different transpires, then the host has to call in, start the process, no one believes anyone as all calls can start this way, goes through the channels and meanwhile they know where you live, it takes days to change and hours on the phone to change it.  Where are the host's rights??

Are you hiring more staff to handle all of these calls,  can we cut through the red tape as superhosts to get immediate assistance?

I am completely 100% against this decision and I am reconsidering using Airbnb as my platform.

Upset with this decision.

I agree I live alone and rent out my guest room so I want to know who is coming into my home. I am not happy with this new rule
