Someone broke into our villa and both us and the guest were robbed. How do we proceed? We have no insurance in the house( we thought it was safe) and neither the guest they said. Only a Bose headphones were robbed to them, not the money, should I pay for the item? Maybe try to agree an amount?I told them I was going to but I feel also as a victim of the robbery so I dont know what is fair here.
Thanks in advance for any recommendation
You are not responsible for theft of your guests property from your home (unless perhaps there was negligence on your part, but it doesn't sound like that). If they have travel insurance they may be able to claim, or their own home insurance may cover property when outside the home (but this is usually only for valuable items). It really depends on you - they, like you were probably shocked to be. Urgked, and thankfully nothing more. Giving them money towards a replacement set, or full Payne may mean you get a more positive review - but it may not. Personally I would probably do it and take the hit from the rental income for that guest.
It is their property, if they were concerned about the consequences of it being stolen up to them to insure it, not your problem.
Hi David, it is actually my property, here in Bali things work different and felt very safe at home so no insurance, but that doesnt mean i am not concerned or dont care, simply things are different here. I offered pay for it but would ike to know if this is something we all would do or there is no need as it was not my fault.
Thanks again
Sounds like it would be the equivalent of a weeks rental, just do not see many people doing that.
Thankfully you are safe now and hopefully you will be able to resolve this quickly.
Thanks Alice & Jack, everything is locked now, police report done that day. I cant contact or call airbnb, that's why I did it through the community.
How can I contact Airbnb? I have been host for 2 years and everything was easy because nothing happened. Hopefully we can solve this in a prompt and easy way.
Thanks very much
You can call, text or facebook, details are in this forum.
Make sure you know what you want them to do before contacting them.
We stayed at a, now what we find to be unsage and unfit property (Una Vida Tulum, 9/6-9/10), where our passports and other items were stolen right out of our room while we were away for the day in Tulum, Mexico. It wasn't until the end of the stay 1 day before we were leaving that this incident occured. The concierge were the only people who knew our whereabouts as he was suggesting many thing for us to do. Our villa was in the back of the property. When we arrived back we noticed immediately that our backpacks were stolen which contained our passports, laptops, and other personal items. The reason the items were in our backpack and not in a safe, was because the moment we arrived we were told the safe wasnt working, the guests prior changed the code and they hadn't been able to reset it (1st red flag), throughout the stay and toward the end, we had men coming in who were "trying to fix the safe" they made about 3-4 visits yet nothing was accomplished. Immediately after the incident we noticed the sliding were wide open, so we instantly thought-inside job. What we didn't realize is that the locks never even worked in the first place! So the host chose this villa with a broken safe, broken locks on the sliding door, and in the very back for us to stay at? Seems a bit odd and completely unsafe. When we asked if there were cameras we were told yes, when asked if we could see the footage we were told the camera's weren't working. The major assets to ensure safety ALL BROKEN! The cops came and wrote a report, one cop actually found one of our bags not too far from the property, however there wasn't anything inside anymore.
Fast fowarding - the end of our trip was ruined because we had to spend an entire day at the immigration office to get a document that would get us back into the states.
The host was initially responsive and said they would file an insurance claim for our property and refund us. Once we got back to the states and tried to communicate a plan to get our stuff back they disappeared. We later found out when we did get through to someone that the property doesn't even have insurance! ALL RED FLAGS, I lost count at this point..
I have been trying to contact Airbnb and they haven't seemed to be much help. They said that the host refunded our stay and I never heard anything else. The refund of our stay is not comparable to the items we lost during our trip. Two of us our of the group run a business from home and as you can imagine has many personal crucial inforamtion saved.
I AM WRITING IN HOPES THAT SOMEONE DOES SEE THIS FROM AIRBNB AND FEELS COMPELLED TO DO WHATS RIGHT. I would never recommend this place to anyone as they haven't even covered basic safety measures to ensure the safety of their guests. I was told from THEIR manager that 3 guests have also been robbed and he is so embarrassed. The staff were super helpful it was the owner of the property who has been unresponsive and completey inconsiderate about this situation.
Sincerely,
A girl who simply wants a solution
This happened to us too. Airbnb is terrible because they could care less and keep listing the unfit property on their site. They could care less about their guests! Tell everyone to never rent a villa our house from Airbnb. You are just giving bad hosts free access to steal your stuff. Has anyone else had this happen? I think we need to file a class action against Airbnb.
Sorry to hear from all victims.
You are all right, when we rent a place from Airbnb we should feel safe.
Same thing happened to us couple of weeks ago in Spain. So far Airbnb is giving us the runaround by offering $500 for $40,000 worth of stolen items.
It's time for a class action suit against Airbnb. Anyone who wants to join please write back.
Barcelona, Spain - June 2022
My son and 2 friends - They went out for the day and came back to a ransacked Airbnb apt. Stolen: Ipad, laptop, full backpack with items, sunglass, eyeglasses.
No reply for Airbnb owner. No help from Airbnb, as of now. My son's friend will need to call Airbnb's emergency 24-hour number, again, from Spain.
They called the police but not much went from there.
I was able to track my Ipad with find my Ipad but there wasn't anyone to go search for it. Too dangerous.
Very disheartening. Thankfully the three young men are safe.
I recently learned that it is not unusual for Airbnb's to be robbed. I never new this.
We rent from Airbnb frequently. Hosts should supply safes and stop being obnoxious by saying folks should not be traveling with computers, Ipads, etc. Almost everyone travels with these items and more.
Very disappointing.
And, the Airbnb link to the property is not working!
Very Sorry to hear from all the victims.

Hi, if you or anyone else want to do a class action suit against Airbnb please contact me. Myself and numerous other travel nurses I know have been targeted and stuff stolen from and Airbnb has done nothing to rectify situation.
