what To charge a guest asking for a one night stay when I require two night minimum

Is it proper to ask for extra fee as it would cut into my weekend and I could potentially lose money?

Yes, I think this is perfectly acceptable...we just did this ourselves with a recent guest. We charged them 50% of what the nightly rate would have been for the second night. It works out well for both parties because the guest doesn't have to book 2 nights at full price and for you, you still get money even with no one sleeping in the house. Yes, it's true that you could still lose out on the opportunity that someone would have maybe booked that second night, but the guaranteed money was worth it for our situation.

Hi @Meagan-and-Wade0 ,

I have a cottage that sleeps 10 and I am renting a lot of weekends for family gatherings and the like. One of the likes is "party".

My policy is 2 nights minimum. It makes no sense to me to stipulate a 2 night minimum stay and then start negotiating how much one night would be. If You want Saturday night, You have to book Friday night also, it's as simple as that. No discount on nothing.

And: Saturay night only = this will be a party.

Think why you originally minimised your booking for two nights.

I think as @Ute42 has written, one night will be party night and you have a weeks worth of cleaning to do after it.

If you wish to do it, may I suggest you charge 3 times the price for one night not 50% as I have read on the blogs the devastation left in the wake of student parties.

If you have a 2 night minimum stick to it. I'm sure there's a reason for your decision........I have a 3 night min and if it were me, I wouldn't accept anything less than 3 nights. The guest can decide to actually stay only 1 night out of the 3 but I'd expect to be paid for 3 nights regardless. If the guests need to stay only 1 night, they can go find somewhere that accepts 1 night stays.

It's like buying a whole cake, only eating one piece while throwing  the rest away then asking the bakery to accept payment for only one slice. How much the guest decides to eat is up to them......but if the bakery sells only whole cakes they aren't going to let people by 1/4 of a cake or half a cake. Or the guest can go somewhere else that sells cake by the slice.
