ERRONEOUS BOOKING

AirBnB just confirmed a guest WITHOUT MY SAY SO.  Even before I read their request, I got a notice saying he had been confirmed!  WTF?

Hello Lizzie. If I did hit that button, it would have been inadvertently.  I've since closed down the listing.  The problem I guess I'm having with the AirBnB route is that it gives me very little 1-on-1 sense of prospective tenants.  In other means like Craigslist or Westside Rentals, I require a personal interview.  This is in part because I don't really want to rent for very short-term, but rather 2 or 3 month minimum, and the guesthouse is adjacent to where I myself reside, so I'm very particular.

Aw I am sorry to hear you are no longer listing on Airbnb, I do understand your reasons. I know many hosts would recommend you to take a few bookings on Airbnb before activating Instant Booking, so it does sound like you were unfortunate here.  If you explore the Community Center you will see that many hosts talk about the steps/questions they ask and things they inform their guests of before accepting their request. This enables them to build up a conversation before the booking. It does sound like this method is more along the lines of what you are looking to do.
