Had to abandon an airbnb because of deceptive and dangerous location of home

Reserved five nights to what looked like an idillic place in Costa Rica.  Read reviews as well as pictures.  Not once did my husband and I imagine that getting to this "paradise" entailed two hours of driving high altitude steep mountain, large part unpaved, no railings, no signs, lots of dangerous curves.  This while driving in turrential rain, mud slides, rock slides and flooded roads.  Thank goodness for the 4x4.  None of this is stated in the description.  Everyone has the right to know the location of their potential stay.   Once we arrived, with frayed nerves, we are met by host in a very dark home.  We are informed that the electricity goes out on occasion, so he gave us tea lights to light the home.  Yes, I said tea lights!  We were so tired we just took turns holding the tea light closest to the shower faucet in order to see the handles and took a very cold shower, since no electricity equals no hot water.  The next morning we decide to give it another try and we ventured out of the house compounds.  Big mistake!  We drove 40 minutes one way, because we got very lost.  Mud slides, flooded, impassible roads, steep road.  I got out of the car to help my husband make a u-turn so that the car with us in it would not go over the cliff.  We finally found a person on a scooter.  We paid him to led us to the address.  At this point, I would have given him all my money to feel safe!  By the time we arrived, I was emotionally and physically sick.  I knew I did not want to stay here another minute.  I did not feel safe.  The nearest town was an hour away.  Even to get gas for the car.  We call Airbnb and told them everything we had experienced and we told our host as well.  At this point, we just wanted to get to another place that we safe.  Airbnb credited $103 out of $420 that we paid for the five days.  They did not help us to find another place.  We had to find a hotel in downtown San Jose for the next three days and pay three times that amount.  A bill we did not expect to incur.  We felt totally abandoned.  I am so disappointed and disgusted in the way this situation was handled by this company, considering that their current revenue is $2.6 billion dollars, of which has been made through the average person such as ourselves, who help keep this company successful.  When my husband and I most needed this company to really say we care, to say, "let's help you and make sure feel you're not alone", especially in a foreign country, they took the approach of how much money can be kept from this transaction, and go fend for yourselves.  Shame on you.

@Ray258  Sounds like a harrowing experience for you. You say you read the reviews and looked at the photos. Did you thoroughly read through the listing description? Did you do any research at all on what the climate was like there this time of year? Or what the elevation of the town was? Did you communicate with the host when you booked to find out further info?

It sounds like you booked a place in the third world, but expected first world conditions.

I'm not trying to be harsh here, it's just that there's a certain amount of responsibility people have to take for doing some research on an area before deciding to travel there.

If you can post the URL for this property others can have a look to see if there are any glaring omissions or deceptions in how the host described the place.

@Ray258

All potential guests are able to see the general vicinity of the listing location - and see if there are resturants or shops or other homes in the area. Also upon booking you would have the exact address - so technically you did know the exact location of where you would be staying.

If you were planning to drive there, honestly...... I'm a bit surprised you didn't try putting the address into google map to check the route it suggests and confirm with the owner that the google map recommended route is the best option for driving. I sympathize with you regarding the terrifying experience you went through, but I really don't think you can blame it on the host.

When travelling to an unfamilar country/location, I would consider it the traveller's responsibility to do your homework and research the area. Sorry to say......the fact that you and your husband didn't know in advance that you had a 2hr drive ahead of you in order to reach the listing you booked is more shocking to me.

Maybe a cruise ship or an all inclusive compound holiday with attentive staff will suit you best in your future travels.

@Ray258  Looks like a fantastic place to visit if it weren't for bad weather and loss of power. As the title suggests 'Birdhouse in the Sky Mountain retreat' this would entail a long journey.

Having been to Costa Rica many  years ago, I can attest to the fact that the roads are terrible pretty much everywhere, and this of course isn't your hosts fault.

@Ray258   This place has pages and pages of stellar reviews- everyone has loved it, many said it exceeded their expectations, and while some mentioned that the road was difficult, they managed to consider that all part of the adventure, except for you. You blamed the host for you not doing your due diligence (altho you say in your review that you did). I'm not sure how you expected a secluded place on a mountaintop in Costa Rica in the rainy season to have some 1st world type road going up to it .  And yes, remote places like this in the 3rd world often have electrical outages. If you can't be adaptable and enjoy a new adventure in a stunning place, and enjoy the positive intead of dwelling on the negative, I suggest you stick to well-appointed hotels in the first world the next time you travel.

I'm afraid, @Ray258, your review of the property makes you come across as somebody who made a massive mistake and wants somebody else to take the blame. Perhaps the shame lies with you, not the host.

You might want to stick to a Marriott in future.

@Ray258 I'm so confused by your reaction to your stay, honestly. You booked a place in a on a mountain in rainforest in Central America, and were suprised when the roads were difficult. What was your expectation about the location and the drive? The pictures and the listing make it sound like it's in the middle of nowhere. How did that differ from what you encountered? Many reviews mentioned the roads were difficult and required a 4x4. It sounds like you just selected a place that wasn't a good fit for you and want someone else to pay for your choice.

Ah, but her review of her stay in San Juan isn't much better. I think that Costa Rica is just not the right country for this particular group.

Whoops. San José....

@Susan151  I noticed that as well.

Yes, and they arrived an hour before the agreed (already earlier than usual) check in time. No wonder the host was upset.

I went to Costa Rica once on a college trip through my school. A similar experience; crazy winding roads up steep, steep mountains (on a couch bus!) and we did loose power once or twice in the hotels. I was actually there during a major earthquake and areas we had visited just two days before were devastated. Everyone had a great time and it was absolutely beautiful. Maybe things are different at a resort?

Been there! Sounds idyllic. What were the beds like?
