I live in Los Angeles. Recently Airbnb has been trying to counter claims that hosts discriminate, and I think they are taking great steps in this matter and trying hard. But, what if Airbnb itself is structurally racist? My questions comes from this:
Los Angeles is 28% white, yet of the 56 City Hosts Airbnb has selected to represent LA, 54 of 56 are white (as far as I can tell). And one of the non white ones is "The Gangsta Gardner". Yes. Seriously.
Does any one else found this troubling and counter to Chesky's message?
What a specious agruement! You need a complete listing of all the folks who offer property in LA, then a list of all the folks Airbnb contacted to be part of this promotion. You'd probably also want to know of all the host in LA, which ones are either highly rated or SuperHost because Airbnb is only going to select either a highly rated or SuperHost to be a featured representative from these numbers only then could you start your arguement. And, if a person finds themselves a "Gangter Garnder", then why can't they express themselves that way?
I don't think they are selected from Hosts. These are people offering tours, at extra cost. Airbnb has chosen these people to represent Los Angeles to visitors, and they have chosen 54/56 white people to show off a city that is 28% white. That is my point.
Yes, just to confirm, having re-read your post for clarity: This is not a group of hosts that Airbnb has selected. These are people offereing tours of the city that Airbnb seems, in effect, to have hired.
