Hi everyone,

Whether you're newer to hosting or cleaned your listing for the 800th time, we don't have scratch our heads for too long to recall a great and memorable story from our hospitality career. Over my 3+ years here on the Community Center you've made me laugh, cry, gasp and sometimes, just close the lid on my laptop.

I'd love to hear you all spin a yarn once more! Share your most memorable hosting story!

I'll be tagging some of those Hosts who's stories I know would make a wonderful edition to this anthological thread, but please do all share your amazing experiences.

Thanks,

Stephanie

What a fun topic. Wow. There are a few stories that make me smile. Airbnb is about trust and relationships. I hope the corporation remembers that as the best part of why the platform works. I think I've talked about these before - the guest who wanted a place as a home because surgery meant she couldn't yet eat at a restaurant. I could tell her husband was miserable (about her illness, not the house) but happy to be in a place that was comfortable. Or the woman who baked cookies for my daughter and was a repeat guest because she was visiting her grandchildren. When there was a new grandchild I brought over a signed copy of a book. It took her a few days to realize I really am a children's author and that I had, in fact, written the book. Then there was the family whose son couldn't get home, so they rented my place a second time and brought their own Christmas tree. The caterer who hosted her niece and her niece's two boys so they could have a home cooked meal for a weekend and live in a big comfortable space. A local woman (usually a no-no) who asked if she could rent for herself and her parents because they didn't want her to spend her birthday alone. So they drove in from St. Louis to be with her. The couple who's daughter painted a mural at the zoo. They came from the unveiling and she'd given them the wrong date. So they had to come a day early. Rather than adjust the dates they stayed and played board games (of which I have many) and made memories.

Others:

1. A few months into pandemic lockdown we got an inquiry from a brand new guest who wanted to rent for six weeks. It was a same-day check-in and they had just signed up on the platform that day.  I was suspicious. We found a way to combat the Airbnb filters so we could talk on the phone. After a 30 minute talk that involved a lot of laughing, we said yes but cautioned we were having a new couch delivered. No problem. They helped us with the move and were a total joy. Because one spouse was still working, the other spouse and I masked up and went thrift store hunting so we could both get fresh air. We provided tips on where she could take her son for entertainment. That's been two years and that guest and I are friends on social media now. She even remembered my daughter's art background and would alert me anytime someone had items for sale (A kiln, etc.).

2. I once booked an in-home stay during a conference. I didn't realize the host was putting guests in her own room and sleeping in her office. But there was a glitch. Another guest attending the same educator's event booked for two days but didn't realize, when booking, that the end date is the check-out date, not the second night. No problem. The host went to Ikea and got another bed so the woman didn't have to leave. The three of us laughed and had a great breakfast together in the morning.. Fast forward, that host stayed with us during a cross-country trip. And we're now friends. If she's in town and our Airbnb is booked, she just stays with us (as a friend, not a paying guest).  Well, she's since gotten married, had a beautiful baby and is running for Congress.

3. I'm hosting four gentleman at the apartment. I know people are cautious about "third-party" bookings but this company had a great set of reviews and provided copies of each staff members ID. One day I was working on the yard using a new leaf shredder. On my second pass I realized leaf shreds were blowing everywhere and thought the machine was defective. There was a tap on my shoulder and two of the men came out and showed me that I had forgotten to zip the collection bag. Neither spoke English and I couldn't find a translator on my phone. So we began using sign language and suddenly there were three of us working on the yard and gesturing and laughing. Well, their one-month stay has turned into eight months and counting. The company  reported the guys love living there and we love having them. I worried when the company said they didn't need me to clean periodically. But the company said they were fine.

Well, as luck would have it the air conditioning and the fridge went out the same week and the weather was forecast to be growing hotter. Because of the language barrier I didn't find out for several days days. I only found out because I was checking in with the UK office to make sure everything was going well. I think their local supervisor's calls were going to spam because they weren't in my contact list. I was able to get a contractor but everyone was booked solid and it would take several days. The supervisor said "no problem, they're running box fans." But the fridge couldn't wait because the food was perishable and the delay meant no cold for several days (melted ice cream, etc.) So I got Lowes to deliver a new refrigerator the next morning - no extra charge for the emergency delivery. I took photos of all the items in the old fridge, threw it all away, then went to several different stores to buy the same brands and then added extra items. While at the apartment I did a quick walk through: It had been five months and the apartment was in great shape and the bathroom was gleaming. Fast forward, the company said the guys were thrilled and asked if they can stay until the project is completed. Despite the language issue, one thanked me for allowing them to use my "beautiful home." When this is over I'll have hosted them for a full year when this is all done. This will be my longest single guest stay ever and it's been a joy.

Honestly - I love these kinds of guests the most. I don't really enjoy the ones who treat it as a hotel equivalent. I would love to see Airbnb have two systems - a corporate commercial side, and a side for owners like me who enjoy interacting with or hosting guests in spaces we reserve for family and friends.

Beautiful!

Hi everyone.

This is my first conversation in the community center.I ve been hosting with Airbnb for 3 years.I do it with passion and treat my guests the same way as I want to be treated when I m a guest myself.

I've always had support from Airbnb when needed, either by emails or by phone.I have a two bedroom apartment in the south of Malta and guests enjoy this part of the Island as they can easily mix with the locals, they can get a ferry to the Capital city enjoy lovely beaches ,we have at least 300 days of sunshine in a year,so tourists come for the sun and sea too.

Can t complain with bookings especially this year.I suggest other hosts to offer discounts for longer stays because this works for me.Guests appreciate when you give suggestions and tips to help them make the most of their stay. This will reflect in their reviews.

Thankyou Airbnb for giving me Super host status again.

Regards Anna

This topic has come up before and I have over the years related these 3 stories but as you have asked Steph, I will trot them out again.....

1/.......In January 2016 we hosted Rosemary (not her real name)  from New South Wales.

She booked a 4 night stay and when she booked she said she was regarded as Australia's leading junior swimming coach and she was coming as an invited guest at one of her swimming pupils wedding which was being held at a nearby venue. She said...."He has told me, I can't possibly get married unless Rosemary attends"!

I thought, this is going to be great and I told her where all the swimming facilities were in the area so she could keep her fitness in tune!

January in Australia is our hottest month with temperatures consistently in the mid to high 30's (90's f)  and the day Rosemary's stay was to start was no exception.

An access van pulled up out the front of our listing, the driver helped this most enormously rotund woman out of the van. She was quite the largest person I have ever seen that was still actually mobile.

I just stared in disbelief.....this surely wasn't the guest I was hosting. We shook hands and she introduced herself and I thought, 'My God, this has got disaster written all over it, I am not equipped to handle a guest like this!"

With a crutch under one arm and the driver helping under the other we managed to get her inside the cottage and on the bed, she was sweating profusely and the van driver left.......'What the hell do I do now'?

As fast as I could I got onto Airbnb CS and explained the situation and the rep asked if I wanted to cancel the stay. I told him...."She is already here, I can't turn her out now but, I wanted you to be aware that this stay could have issues, this is not the guest I thought I would be hosting and I want it on file that I am really concerned and may need Airbnb's help"!

I left Rosemary to it that afternoon and evening and she seemed to get on ok. The next afternoon, the eve of the wedding, I was sitting outside under the shade and she came out of the cottage, came over and we started to talk. She started telling me about her swimming successes and my reaction, just to myself was, 'For goodness sake, stop trying to insult me, you would empty a swimming pool, not fill one!'

I asked her if she would like a cup of tea which she accepted, Ade came out and we started to talk and all of a sudden she teared up! She told us how her condition had taken over her life, robbed her of her career, her family had largely abandoned her and she had ended up all alone in a country town in NSW with little else but her memories. From that point she had hit rock bottom and she became great company, she was funny and witty and we exchanged stories and had a nice couple of hours.

Next morning the day of the wedding and the bridegroom and his best man arrived to escort Rosemary to the wedding. He walked up our driveway, he put his arm around Rosemary's shoulder. It looked so comical, all 6ft 4 of him to Rosemary's 5ft 2. He was indeed one of Australia's greatest swimmers with many medals to his name. He looked me in the eye and he said to me......

"I couldn't have done it without this woman"!

I thought, 'Well, there you go, you never judge a book by its cover'!

Here was Rosemary's review.......

Great review from swimming coach.png

2/......In 2018 a couple from Mt Macedon in Victoria booked to stay for one night.

They were part of a world wide service club ('Kiwanis' I think) and as part of a cultural exchange they had a 67 year old Japanese woman staying with them.

They decided to take this visitor to the Flinders Ranges in our state of South Australia to show her the Australian outback, and booked to stay here as the half way point in their trip back home to Mt Macedon.

It was a lovely warm still afternoon and I was sitting with the guests at one of our outdoor settings and the conversation got around to the fact that I had a piano in my man cave. Now it's not an actual strings and hammers piano, being at altitude with the variation in climate you can't keep a traditional piano in tune. But this piano of mine is the very best of digital pianos. It has the exact sound, touch and feel as a concert grand.

The guest who booked said this Japanese visitor of theirs played the piano and she asked if she could see the piano so, we migrated into the mancave.....

QDSCN0045.JPG

This 67 year old woman sat down at that keyboard and she was, absolutely, the best jazz pianist I have ever heard! She played all the old great jazz classics, we got a heap on Indian take away and ate, drank and listened to her for an hour or two. I regard myself as a reasonable pianist but I felt like a kindergarten kid alongside her.......it was a night I will always remember!

3/.........Also back in 2016, Nick and Hannah from London booked to stay here for a week. When he booked Nick said his only concern was, Hannah had been bitten by a dog as a child and had developed a life long canine fear, and us having a dog could possibly present an issue for her.

I told Nick I had a daughter living a couple of kilometers from here and if it were to be a problem I could take the dog over there for the week they were here. They didn't want to turn our routine around unduly so we agreed to see how the issue evolved.

Our Betts is our burglar alarm and when anybody comes here she lets out a welcoming bark and wants to exchange pleasantries with the visitors.

When Nick and Hannah arrived Betts just seemed to sense that she should keep her distance and for the first two days all went smoothly. On the third afternoon we were (as we sometimes do) talking with the guests, having a drink and a nibble plate of food. Betts came up and just sat between Hannah and Ade and after a while Hannah pushed a biscuit across the table and off the side which Betts promptly ate. That was it, nothing further but next afternoon Hannah asked if she could come out and watch while Betts went through her afternoon ball retrieving process.....she just loves to chase a tennis ball and return it to my feet. After a while Hannah asked if she could have a go with the plastic ball thrower and a bond was definitely starting to form. Betts obediently brought the ball back to Hannah's feet ready for another throw.

On Sunday at the conclusion of their stay when it was time for them to leave Hannah had to give the dog her personal goodbye and it was so heartwarming to see.

This was Nick's review.......

You can't manufacture these experiences or even predict them, they just come out of nowhere and we do have many of them. They are what makes hosting such a pleasure and something that really enriches our lives.

@Stephanie I don't think I can match @Robin4 or @Christine615 with the their recollections my memorable moments was our first Christmas only open 1 month when an English couple stayed when Covid first hit and everyone wasn't allowed to travel overseas.

They were excited to stay bought their own large Christmas tree and large turkey to cook because they wanted to have an English cristmas as they couldn't travel home to their families. They female guest was proposed to on the the beach at 5.30 am (Boxing day in Australia) and her parents were able to witness this on zoom (English Christmas eve).

Happy couple happy memories as we had been let in on the secret proposal by partner.

I won't lie. My most memorable hosting experience (or at least the one that has been retold most to my friends) is one of those that probably made you gasp AND shut your laptop:

https://community.withairbnb.com/t5/Hosting/Condom-Girl-AKA-My-Weirdest-Guest/m-p/1223607#M294344

But thankfully, it's not only the totally crazy guests that spring to mind. Several of my guests have become friends and one even became my pandemic housemate for nearly a year and saved me from insanity during lockdowns and the first Christmas I ever spent without my family or boyfriend.

Then there was the young couple who got engaged while staying here, which was exciting. Right now, I have another couple here who first visited in 2017.  They got married last Friday and chose to spend their honeymoon staying with me again as they had such fond memories from five years ago. I have to say I felt really touched by this. It's moments like these that make me remember why I'm hosting.

Thanks for the laugh... although I may have an Airbnb nightmare tonight!

Here's the review my honeymooning guests just left me, which has really made my day:

"Nothing but praise for this fantastic airbnb! We stayed at Huma's place for the second time, this time for our honeymoon! Huma knew this and on arrival there was a bottle of prosecco and a card in our room. Extremely sweet and thoughtful! We stayed in a different room than last time, but also this room was fantastic. The room was bigger than in the picture, the bed was lovely and there was plenty of closet space for storing your clothes. There are three bathrooms and two toilets in the house, so there is always one available. The bathrooms are clean and there are toiletries that guests can use, such as shampoo and conditioner. Very nice! The house does not have air conditioning for as far as I know, but the house is really nice and cool! When we were in London, it was sometimes 28 degrees and even then the house stayed nice and cool. The house itself is beautiful and characteristic. You can tell that Huma has put a lot of time and attention into the design. The location of the airbnb is perfect! There is a Lidl at 4 minutes walking distance and the metro station is about 6 minutes walking. At the subway you will find the Northern line and the Victoria line, which provide a good connection with the rest of the city. You'll be in another part of London in no time. Then the host himself. Huma is a fantastic host: she is hospitable, friendly and is often in for a nice chat. She is accompanied by her three sweet cats Merlot, Pinot and Grigio who often want to be petted. I love cats, so as far as I'm concerned this airbnb is a 10 for me. I have so much more to say about this fantastic airbnb, but I think this review has been for quite a long time haha. The airbnb is fantastic in every way and we will be back soon! "

Again, as I said, it's guests like these that keep me hosting.

Definitely the guy who walked around my front porch naked... *then* tries to cover the fully disclosed, outdoor camera with a plastic bag but it won't stay up. While he's up there, fully exposed, a neighbor drives by. Good Lord I hope the neighbor's daughter wasn't in the car!

I'm an experience host, I take guests on safari on horses. One of my most memorable was an engagement proposal ride - the first I'd ever hosted. The groom-to-be came to see me the day before with his idea - he brought me a bundle of bamboo poles, red ribbon, clothing pegs and a stack of photo memories from their life together. He wanted me to make a half-moon with the poles, then string the ribbon around and peg their photos on - a photo 'wall'.

Of course I can't set up in advance as we ride in a wildlife reserve - and, um, free-roaming wild animals! We always have two guides on each ride, so I packed everything in my backpack where she wouldn't see it. I asked them both (so she wouldn't suspect) if they mind if I took photos and videos "for my marketing". Half way through the ride, I said I needed to go and check on something elsewhere in the reserve and left them to continue with the other guide, while I sneaked off to go and set up.

I hadn't factored in that the ground would be too hard to stand the bamboo poles in, so as fast as I could plant them and string the ribbon, they'd be toppling over at the other end. I had visions of the guests arriving to a pile of sticks and ribbon with me crying on the ground in the middle. I did accidentally leave the camera rolling where I'd set it up to capture their moment... so I have the entire blooper reel on film of me fighting with the poles! In a last minute effort to save their moment, I ditched the bamboo poles and moved over to a thicket of trees and strung the ribbons and photos in the branches.

They arrived, none the wiser, and I got them off their horses to 'stretch their legs and enjoy the view' and he then led her over and popped the question. I had mic'ed him before as well, so filmed their whole ride and proposal with the hidden camera in the bushes! All is well that ends well!

She said yes, of course!

One of my guests told me what school she went to and the year she was born, a fair few moons ago.

I nearly choked, found it very hard to hold back the giggles, and sat on a wee secret until I could no longer keep a straight face and told her that she went to school with a dearly beloved friend of mine.

She doesn't recall him as they were in different classes, but she knows his cousin who also went to the same school.

One of the other most funniest things, has been introducing Guests to Nature and insects.

Only an English visitor would be game enough to delicately handle a Praying Mantis and put it up close to their mouth!! Some hilarious photos exist I would not dare put online.

I better not share the other story which happened away from my home involving a gorgeous lamb we called Louis...and an American Guest, as I don't wish others to read or try it and land in trouble.
