Why put a 24 hour time limit on special offers?

I had a guest inquiry yesterday morning about adding a ninth person (my listing's max is eight).  It was acceptable with an additional fee, and I sent the additional fee using the special offer function.  By the time my guest got back to my message this afternoon, the offer had expired, which required me to offer it again.  I know it is not the end of the world, but the 24 hour time limit just seems totally unnecessary.  The time limit is unnecessary, because hosts already have the option to repeal the special offer.  Why not drop the time limit and just let the host repeal the special offer if/when needed?

I am am guessing it's because the Special Offer needs to be actively accepted- otherwise host are in a situation where they don't know if the guest is happy to accept the change - or worse still the guest never accepts and turns up with an extra person and you only get paid the original amount.

having said that - 24 hours seems a bit tight!
