@Elisa From searching online I discovered this is an issue that's been previously known/discussed, and apparently not resolved.  

My wife cannot link her phone number to her account because the app says its already in use by another account.

I recommend reaching out to Airbnb Customer Support as soon as possible to solve the issue.
