My friends and I recently stayed at an Airbnb in Colorado. When we had arrived we noticed the carpet on the stairs were stained and had marks on it, we thought nothing of it and had assumed the owners already known of the damage. After we had left I had gotten a message stating that we would get charged a for a carpet replacement. I said my case and told them we took off our shoes at the bottom of the stairs and we had already noticed the stains but didn’t think anything of it. They then said they contacted the people who had stayed there prior and recently just got back in touch saying they were going to charge us. Is there any ways to get out of this? I regret not taking a picture of the damage but it truly was not me and my friends. We are all under 21 so we think it’s just an attempt to make a little extra money off of us.
Without photo proof it's hard to determine who caused the issue. The Host may have photos of the property before your stay to show the stains were not there. Some Hosts have their cleaners take photos after a guest stays.
You can refuse to pay the charge and Airbnb will make a determination. Sometimes they just cover the charge from the Host if you don't accept the charge under Aircover for the Host.
