I'm staying in Missouri for a few weeks to do research at a university here. Two nights into my stay, I found four cockroaches. And I have seen one cockroach each night since. I saw one last night, and this morning I found a small one on the kitchen counter. I've never even seen cockroaches before this, but I swear this is not normal. I paid almost $6000 for just a little over three weeks of time here. The host called in a company to do something about it, but I spoke to the guy who came and he said ultimately there's no way to keep them them from coming into the unit. Is that true? At what point can I request a refund?
@Zilan2 Your host responded promptly to your complaint and provided a necessary service. Unfortunately, if you are in an apartment building and adjacent units in the building are not treated, roaches may return from an infested unit that is not owned or rented by the host of your apartment. Did you receive any instructions from the bug specialist on what to do to not invite roaches back into the apartment? Did he suggest securing your food in closed containers and to not leave unwashed dishes, pots and pans in the sink overnight?
If you want any kind of refund, leave immediately. This minute. Do not wait another night. Realize that AirBnB will penalize the host even though he responded promptly to your complaint. Also be aware that AirBnB will probably not refund your payment to your credit card or bank account for multiple business days and that the delay is not controlled by your host.
It is a second floor apartment above a business also owned by the host with no adjacent units. The bug specialist didn't suggest those things because I was already doing them. Unfortunately I do not think it is my fault the bugs are here. Thank you for your advice, though. I luckily haven't seen any more since, but if I do then I will leave.
Hi @Zilan2
Please don't leave without the host/airbnb agreeing to a full refund of any remaining nights .
