Extra cleaning fee

Extra cleaning fee

Hi there! I am new to hosting and recently had guests that left tons of trash and our kitchen needed a deep clean after they left. Can you charge a cleaning fee afterwards and has anyone ever had to do this!?

I think we need a fuller picture how many guests how long a stay that is factors.  2 Guests for a week or the 8 for a month?  Different dirt levels.  It is a STR so they don't have the same mindset of a LTR who wants their deposit back.

Hi thanks for your response. There were supposed to be 4 guests staying for 3 nights. They ended up having another 2adults and 2 children stay without notice as well. When I say trash everywhere I mean they left leftovers and open meat in the fridge and pizza boxes in the mudroom. The kitchen had spaghetti sauce everywhere (floors, cupboards, counters, stove, etc.).
Also we don’t charge a “cleaning fee” we included it in our price. In addition I don’t have a cleaning company I do the cleaning myself.

If you can demonstrate (photo /video evidence and cleaner invoices) cleaning is over and above your standard clean then yes you can submit a request for payment.

As @Helen3 and @Marie8425 mention, it would help to know how many guests staying for how long. What they made/cooked in the kitchen is also significant. Maybe they  used everything, baked and fried, etc. We had a guest once fry a steak in a whole stick of butter on stovetop, splattering everywhere in the space, and then scouring my cast iron comal. Fortunately, good cast iron can be re-seasoned, but her style left quite a mess all up the walls and on every surface. In addition, Holiday meals often leave a stove and oven challenge.

Also  relevant is what guests expect: all guests leave their trash and recycling here, even those who know we have no trash service here. We have to load it up and drive it down the mountain to the dump. Many guests leave the kitchen used for us to clean. Different guests have different standards of cleanliness. If you charge them a cleaning fee, they likely expect to be cleaned up after. Also, our guests may have a cleaning service at home, and deep cleaning the kitchen is not something they do. As @Marie8425 said, they are not LTR renters who are cleaning to get their deposit back. A very different situation and a very different mindset.

It is just a part of this business, and every set of guests will be different. I personally would not request additional payment for the clean up. I do hope this is not a regular occurrence. If it is, I'd re-evaluate my cleaning fee. I deep clean everything after every stay, and I've noted that most everyone sees that, and honors my example of sparkle and shine.

I agree kitchen areas especially need a strict cleaning process. What one person thinks is unacceptable to another they haven't even thought about a situation.  Not meeting standards could just be innocent.  I have a shared house I positively encourage use the dishwasher.  The main reason a secret, nobody hand washes at my husband's standard.  He quietly rewashes any dish in our dishrack that he didn't wash.  Haha

We have a shared house too. We do not have a dishwasher and never have. I rewash everything myself as my standards are high like his are.

We moved from Hawaii, An area normal to not have a dishwasher.  It took a while and research data to get my husband on board with a dishwasher even after the install haha.
